Saturday, October 31 is officially Jontavious Willis Day in Monroe!
Our mayor signed the proclamation, and the nice official one is at City Hall. And it asks us to recognize what Jontavious has given to American music and to Georgia.
Jontavious grew up singing gospel beside his grandfather at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Greenville, Georgia. He taught himself guitar, banjo & harmonica. At 19, Taj Mahal invited him on stage. Since then he’s earned a Grammy nomination and carried Georgia blues to audiences around the world.
But some of his most important work happens off stage. With filmmaker Henry Jacobs, he spent time recording and filming living blues musicians of Georgia and Alabama, so their music is documented for generations to come.
That’s the thing about the blues. It lives because people like him keep it going.
The city calls him an ambassador to the blues. On Saturday, Monroe gets to say thank you.
Jontavious, we appreciate you. We genuinely appreciate what you do for music, for the blues, for the history of the blues, and especially for that history as it pertains to Georgia. And we appreciate you coming to Monroe to share your talent & music, and the musicians you’re bringing with you. 💜
This week, put on one of his records, or some Curley Weaver, Barbecue Bob, Ma Rainey, Blind Willie McTell, etc. Then come hear him Saturday night in Downtown Monroe. Let’s show him what this town sounds like when it’s listening.
Thank you so much to Mayor John Howard and the City of Monroe for honoring him and this music. And thank you to the residents of Monroe for supporting live music and the musicians who make sure it endures. 💜🎶
