Although by the looks of things we don’t need it yet, setting water pipe for the rye crop. What’s this state’s nickname again? Oh yeah, Big Sky.

Sometimes social media veneers are ALL AWESOME ALL THE TIME. We’ve had some big wins with our Ancient Wisdom receiving plaudits and a great Tiki Week, so it’s only fair to tell you about barrel #209.

When out at the rickhouse picking barrels for our 10 year rye, I noticed this oddball, its head painted blue with a green horizontal stripe. The info on the head tells us it’s rye (RW) and that it was barreled in Oct 2016. Typically, we will paint the barrel heads when we reuse the barrel (white if the barrel was first used for bourbon, green if ex-rye and blue for aged aquavit). Our rye whiskey goes into new barrels, so the head should be unpainted. This was the first clue that something was off. No recollection why the weird stripes, but it was obviously a warning. When we pulled a sample, our head distiller flash bore the brunt of our decade old mistake. He labeled the sample ‘yuk’ and “had to eat four handfuls of almonds to get the taste out of my mouth.” It was terrible.

What went wrong? 🤷‍♂️ Best guess is that we had a bad fermentation and decided to distill it anyway. Garbage in => garbage out. Luckily we were smart enough to warn our future selves something was amiss.

What to do with this barrel? Dump it? (Dumping even bad whiskey makes me wince.) Use it for scientific experiments? Send it to North Korea? Or simply keep it as an example of what happens when corners are cut. One thing we won’t do is sell it. We’re not always awesome, but we don’t bottle the bad s**t. 🫡

Eight years ago, a friendly tattoo artist and bike builder approached me at in Portland and asked if she could be our ‘kitchen witch.’ We can’t believe our luck that has been with us for a better part of a decade. Alternatively our distillery mother figure, bottling machine mechanic, amaro creator, and all-around blissful presence, she’s been a staple of the distillery and if you like the things we make then you like her. We’ve got some pretty big shoes (and knitted mittens) to fill, but we thank you Gina from the bottom of our hearts for the years. See you at the next moto show… 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
