Pickled eggs, a barroom favorite for centuries. Pickled eggs were a classic pub and tavern snack. Because refrigerators did not exist in the 1600s, bars used heavily salted, acidic brines to keep eggs shelf-stable for months at a time. They were frequently offered as free snacks to patrons, similar to bar nuts or pretzels today
