To all of our supporters and the Middlebury community-
The year is 2014. You’re sitting at Village Inn on a Saturday morning, contemplating pie after pancakes. You nose a sip of your steamy coffee and stare off blankly into Main Street. It’s cold, the middle of January. Town is a bit slower, as people migrate around the holidays. You move your eyes across the street and glance in disdain at the brownish murk of what used to be a glistening white snow drift. After dreaming of when the chill of winter will come to an end you notice something. The “FOR SALE” sign on the Winner’s Circle is gone. When did that happen? Who in their right mind would take on that project? You decide the pie is a must, as the temp of the coffee is just too perfect to not have a sweet companion. You enjoy every drop, nibble every little bit and leave a generous tip for the waitress on your way to settle up. As you’re chatting with Sharon at the register, you inquire as to who bought the bar across the street. She gives a little laugh and says something like “oh a silly kid, Austin and his family, he used to work here years ago”. You give a quick shoulder shrug and make your way into the cold.
That was 8 years ago. I was young. Life was much simpler for my then girlfriend/business partner and I. Laura (Lo), is now my wonderful wife of over 5 years. We have a little man who turns 3 soon, and are expecting a baby girl in April. Time will not be opening up or slowing down for us anytime soon, and neither will the business we own.
41 Degrees North has been our baby since January 3, 2014. We have put our heart and soul into every aspect of what it takes to own and operate an independent restaurant. It is an absolute roller coaster, particularly in our world today. It is physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. The lifestyle leaves little room to enjoy ourselves outside of work. On-call all the time, is an understatement. As our family grows, our priorities have shifted. We feel ourselves being pulled away. Our hearts aren’t fully in the fight any longer, so we’ve decided it’s time to move on. Kudos to anyone still fighting. It’s no picnic.
We are humbled and appreciative of the overwhelming support we’ve received over the last almost 7 years. This town is amazing and we are happy to see it becoming more vibrant every year. It has been a pleasure to serve you, all of you. Whether you’re a new friend, old friend or just passing through, you’re what made 41 great. We can’t thank you enough for taking a chance on us and helping us succeed. We have loved being a part of your lives.
We will maintain regular operating hours through Saturday, February 5th, before closing our doors for good. We will offer food and drink specials starting this Friday. Please, take this opportunity to use your gift certificates and see us one last time.
Thank you for all the love and support. You guys made it worth it.
Best Wishes,
Austin and Laura Slabach
