Someone asked me the other day if harvest season was the same every year...🤔

Wouldn't that be something? Everything lines up to just be...predictable.

But then again, if that were the case wine wouldn't be as cool.

The thing about wine is, it's got a story to tell.

One about land and time. A life story about what happened that year.

This is what can make one vintage completely unique from the last.

Part of that is the weather.

Heat, precipitation, cool nights, cloud cover, and sunshine all play a part in the quality of grapes and, you guessed it, the timing of harvest.

So no harvest season is anything but the same year to year. But it sure does make for an interesting ride when the end of summer rolls around.

Have you been to Carlos Creek Winery during harvest season before? It's one of the most exciting times!

Drop a '🍇' in the comments if you want winemaker Russ to give us a lowdown on this year!

A gloomy drizzling morning for bird netting installation. The clouds broke long enough for a small group of volunteers to get it complete in a couple of hours.

Next stop, HARVEST! (Often mid to late Sept)

Its only a matter of time and patience.

Stay tuned!

And now we wait and watch and hope for cooperative weather!

How quickly things get wild!

Left side trimmed, right side is wild.

Take a look at her!
All the vines are tucked & trained into the trellis.
This is as good as shes gonna look the rest of the season until harvest. Ha!

We will now take a little break and let the laterals go a bit wild. Shes gonna be UGLY!
The grapes need somewhere to go with the extra energy all this rain has provided.

At some point in the next few weeks, we will go in and give a HEFTY haircut so the plants shift their energy towards the fruit.

Time to take a breath and hope the weather eases off with all the severe storms.

A little before and after photos.

Spent this past steamy week getting the vines trained into the trellis.
With all the rainy days, they got away from us a bit.
Its wild how fast they grow. Its a marathon race from Memorial day to the 4th of July to keep up with them.

Now to let the plants focus on the fruit. And hopefully, Mother Nature eases off on the hail storms.

Happy Summer!
