Eulogy for Mike and Annie's McKittrick Hotel AKA The Penny Bar 1998-2022

The Penny Bar was a local favorite of folks in the Taft and McKittrick areas. It kept our oil field workers fed for many years as well as surprised many tourists who may be searching for the last place James Dean stopped for gas. The Penny Bar earned its moniker thanks to, well, all the pennies. Owners Mike and Annie Moore spent at least six years hand gluing pennies to every surface of the bar, floors, counters, doors and even the pool table.
Aside from the pennies, the local watering hole was well known for its BBQ, specifically the ribeye served on Thursdays. “You could cut it with a fork. No A1 sauce was needed!” states a former oilfield worker.
Thank you, Penny Bar, for being an oasis in an otherwise desolate landscape serving amazing BBQ to the hungry and pouring beer to the thirsty. We hope that whoever takes over this landmark can keep its charm and live up to the reputation that has been created.
