If we were really smart restaurateurs we wouldn’t reinvent the wheel…

My dinner today and all vegetables in photos were from Food Depot's Ugly rack and cost about $10 bucks for everything in the photos.

That bite of sweet potato casserole or creamy mashed potatoes hits different, doesn’t it? It’s the Proust effect in action—named after Marcel Proust’s famous madeleine moment in his novel. Scientifically, taste and smell (which make up most of flavor) connect directly to the brain’s limbic system via the olfactory bulb, bypassing the usual filters. This triggers vivid, emotional autobiographical memories, often from childhood, linked to family and comfort.

One small forkful can flood you with memories of Mom or Grandmother in the kitchen—safety, love, Sunday dinners. Research shows these food-evoked memories are more intense and emotionally charged than those from other senses, boosting nostalgia, connection, and even mood. That’s why this plate feels like home.

At Johnnie MacCracken’s I stick to some of the classics done right—because that’s what brings you back.

What’s your family dish that takes you straight back?

DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!

The sign might be funny, but I can assure you that drinking and driving can cost you plenty! And if you are drinking in Cobb County the police spend a disproportionate amount of resources to catch you...so they are really good at it.

Cobb County has the highest arrest volume for DUI Arrest in the state of Georgia where a large amount of resources are spent on DUI Arrests.

For example, one report cited 2,847 DUI arrests in Cobb for 2023 (up 12% from the prior year), they make it a deliberate policy choice to prioritize it with dedicated resources more than most metro Atlanta Counties.

A rough estimate for the total cost to a typical first-time DUI defendant in Cobb County, Georgia, ranges from $5,000 to $15,000+ in the first year, with many sources citing an average around $8,000–$12,000 when including direct fees, programs, and short-term insurance hikes. Multi-year costs (especially insurance) can push it to $10,000–$25,000+.

Attorney fees: $5,000–$7,500 for a standard first-offense case in the Cobb/Marietta area (flat fee common; higher for trials or complex cases).

DUI prosecutions in Cobb County are among the lower-cost options for taxpayers compared to many other crimes. Much of the specialized enforcement (task forces, checkpoints) is funded through state and federal grants like H.E.A.T. rather than pure local taxes, while defendants cover a large share of expenses through fines, court fees, probation, and programs.

"Hey, we are a family run American Irish Tavern that operates out of Marietta number 1 Engine Company, good food, and the highest paid bartenders in Cobb county.

Note: When interviewing prospective bartenders we use a practice where we show our POS what the tips are on a normal basis. Places like ours do not have wild sales swings and we have run 24 years of consecutive growth with the exception of Covid. Generally we do not hire a person unless we can prove they can make more money with us (grifting or stealing does not count).

I will be running over to Food Depot to buy the ingredients for this Creole dish as i absolutely love eggplant, the best eggplant in Cobb used to be at a Turkish Restaurant on The Square called Effes, it was a moussaka...and a good eggplant is rare to find no matter what anyone writes.

Photos to follow.

Note: This recipe came from "Creole Fest".

In 1978, civil rights leader Rudy Lombard and chef Nathaniel Burton published “Creole Feast,” a cookbook that gave proper credit to the Black men and women who ran most of New Orleans’ best restaurants.

Psychology of Happy Hours:
They exploit price sensitivity and urgency — cheap drinks in a short window trigger binge consumption as people “stock up” to maximize value, increasing intoxication, impaired driving, and fights.

Why Banned:

In the 1980s (post-MADD era), many places banned them to curb drunk driving and overconsumption after studies linked specials to higher binge drinking and DUIs.

Atlanta & Marietta:

Atlanta long banned time-limited drink specials (prices had to stay the same all week) for safety reasons, but recently relaxed rules for limited happy hour discounts (up to 50% off, no unlimited). Marietta has allowed traditional happy hours. Many municipalities still restrict them to reduce harms.
