Dear Friends of Sunrise and Madison County,
As Madison prepares to face another Catastrophic Category 3-4 hurricane, take comfort in knowing you're enveloped in love, prayers, and the expertise of a exceptional team of first responders, Including a remarkable team of Firefighters and Police in our area. A close friend from the weather service shared valuable advice that I must pass on, many pointers were ones I hadn’t heard of before…
May safety be your top priority, and know our hearts and prayers are with you, uplifting and supporting you through this challenge.

1. Document: Create a new video inventory of your entire house, including drawers, cabinets, and storage containers. Make sure to cover everything inside and outside. Store the video online for easy access from anywhere.
2. Photograph Essential Information: Take pictures of all your insurance policy numbers and emergency contacts. This will allow you to quickly access the information if you need to file a claim.
3. Use Your Dishwasher for Safe Storage: If you don’t have a fireproof or waterproof safe, consider using your dishwasher for important items. Dishwashers are designed to be watertight. Just remember not to turn it on.
4. Do Laundry Before the Storm: Wash all your clothes before the storm hits. Power outages can last days or weeks, and you’ll want clean clothes during that time.
5. Repurpose Your Washer: After washing your clothes, clean out your washing machine and fill it with ice to create a makeshift cooler. It will keep items cold for a while, and the water will drain as needed.
6. Make Ice Blocks: Fill freezer bags with water and freeze them to create ice blocks. A fully packed freezer stays colder for longer. As the ice melts, you’ll also have an additional source of fresh water.
7. Fill the Bathtub: Fill your bathtub with water. This can be used for flushing toilets if the water supply is cut off.
8. Pre-Cool Your Home: The day before the storm, close all curtains and set your thermostat to the coolest possible temperature. Also, turn your fridge and freezer to their lowest settings. This helps maintain a comfortable temperature and keeps food fresh longer if the power goes out.
9. Stock Up on Disposable Dishes: Get paper cups, plates, and utensils. Without water, you won’t be able to wash dishes, so disposable options are convenient.
10. Avoid Driving Through Water: Never drive through flooded areas. Turn around, don’t drown.
11. Secure Important Documents: Place essential documents (like IDs, birth certificates, and insurance papers) in waterproof bags or containers. Keep them with you if you evacuate.
12. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Assemble a kit with essentials like non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and first aid supplies.
13. Charge Electronic Devices: Fully charge your phones, tablets, and portable battery packs. Consider investing in a solar charger for extended power outages.
14. Trim Trees and Secure Outdoor Items: Trim any loose branches and secure or bring inside outdoor furniture and items to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
