A collection of accessory percussion items repaired. The Flexatone needed new spring steel for the clappers, the taxi horn needed a new bulb, and the bell tree needed a new frame. The other bit of bracketry is part of studio storage that broke. A collection of skills this job. Metallurgy (tempering the spring steel for bending), welding, and adhesives. Now if I could just get the right sized phenolic bar for another repair.

A rough-in of a new frame for a bell tree.

Alrighty, the repairs and modifications are complete. There was some damage to the glue joints on the low end that I repaired. There was some sag in the bar rails that I added adjustment screws to compensate, and most of all I adapted a standing desk kit to make the height adjustment electric.

Oh my god it works. Now to pretty up the wiring and mount the controller and interface.

Working on this marimba end piece. Most of the glue joints had failed and there were steel braces holding these joints together. Once the glue dries overnight, I'll finish some tweaks to the instrument frame, then begin prototyping the electric height adjustment.

Slowly but surely, I'm taking steps to resume work for WPS. A major step for that was building a work bench. This one is a doozy. It's in the second garage space, so I designed it to fold up against the wall on French cleats.

Packing up the Workshop!

I'm changing day jobs, and as a result I'm changing locations.

I'll need some time to get settled, so it'll be a few months.

But, when I reopen, it'll be in Spring, TX serving the greater Houston area.

But, good news:

I'm working on getting a booth at TMEA 2025.

I'm also working on merch for that booth (and everyone won't leave me alone about wanting merch so fine)

Also, with a more permanent shop setup, I'd like to livestream more of my repair work.

Future plans include a mobile workshop, but that's a long term goal.

Onward and upward folks.

Process of building some temporary braces. The ends were starting to pull out of the bar rails, but we're at the point in the semester where we can't spare 6-8 weeks to repair that properly. Enter these braces that mechanically pull the end pieces together. This keeps them from pulling apart and dropping the resonators. Once we're past the performance season I can take this instrument out of circulation and repair it properly.
