Today we remember and honor those who lost their lives in the service of our country and also the families and friends left behind. Raising a glass of mead in a Memorial Day toast to you all in Valhalla - Sláinte!

The Celtic festival of Beltane marked the beginning of Summer. It was the Celtic May Day festival celebrated on May 1 in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. In the traditional Celtic calendar, Beltane was a Cross Quarter Day - that is, it was midway between the Spring Equinox (when night and day were of equal length) and the Summer Solstice (the longest day giving the most hours of daylight). This festival was to encourage crop growth over the Summer and to protect the Celtic people's most treasured possessions, their cattle.
The Sí (Fairies) were believed to be very active around Beltane and Samhain. Many of the rituals around these festivals were designed to keep the Sí happy so their mischief would not harm the people or their animals.
To protect their homes, all hearth fires were put out and the embers from the Beltane fires were used to relight them. Doors, windows, and barns were decorated in bright yellow May flowers which were perhaps symbols of the fire. When the Beltane fires died down, the ashes were scattered over crops for added protection.
In some parts of Ireland, thorn bushes, which were thought to be particularly significant to the fairies, were decorated in flowers, ribbons, and colored shells to make a May bush.
Raise a glass or three of Mead, the beverage of Druids and Kings, to celebrate the Celtic beginning of Summer. Happy Beltane mead lovers - Sláinte!

Happy Alban Eiler Mead lovers! On the Spring equinox, night and day stand in perfect balance, with light on the increase. The young Sun God now celebrates a hierogamy (sacred marriage) with the young Maiden Goddess, who conceives. In nine months, she will again become the Great Mother. It is a time of great fertility, new growth, and newborn animals.
The next full moon (a time of increased births) is called the Ostara and is sacred to Eostre the Saxon Lunar Goddess of fertility (from whence we get the word estrogen, and whose two symbols are the egg and the rabbit.)
The Christian religion adopted these emblems for Easter which is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. Now you know why we have the Easter Bunny who happens to bring eggs to the children on Easter - Sláinte!

Lá Fhéile Pádraig - Happy St. Patrick's Day!

We are the sons and daughters of Hibernia,
Proud heirs of an ancient legacy.
We’ve settled every corner of the globe
Driven from our homeland by famine and oppression,
Or simply by the restless spirit that’s our birthright.
Wherever we go, we bring with us a love of Freedom,
A melancholy humor, a biting wit, and a golden tongue.
But, regardless of where destiny may take us,
We’re linked to the land of our ancestors
By an ethereal thread that binds the heart
And reminds us always that we are a unique people.

The Leprechaun took advantage of this beautiful afternoon to walk down to see our dear friends at Meadkrieger. I had the Munin, my drink of choice here for a while. Munin is a Pyment, mead made with honey and grape juice - in this case, sunflower blossom honey and Shiraz grape juice. This mead was a Pro-Am from last year’s Sweethearts Revenge Homebrew Competition. I judged best of show in the Mead and Cider category and this mead took the silver. Matt and Eric have executed it wonderfully and I have enjoyed my share - Sláinte and Skôl!

"If I don't see you when the bonfires are burnin', burnin'
If I don't see you when we're singin' the Gloriana tune
If I've got to see you when it's rainin' deep inside the forest
I've got to see you at the wanin' of the moon

Said oh, won't, won't you come on back?
Want you to be of good cheer
Come back home
On the Celtic New Year..."
