Bar Interview– Bartending Interview Questions and Answers
What happens during a bar interview plays a big role in whether or not you land that bartending job. Although researching the position and writing a good resume are important, nailing the interview is crucial.
Working as a bartender can be a fantastic job, but it’s not for everyone. During a bar interview, you must remain relaxed, positive, show your personality and your desire to learn and always have great responses to the difficult questions your interviewer will ask.
Below you’ll see bar interview questions which will guide you through what you should and shouldn’t say during your interview. During the interview, remember to avoid one-word replies. And, if at any time your interview is interrupted, which is bound to happen in a busy bar – smile and say hello to whoever comes over. You want to show the interviewer that you have a good attitude, are personable and don’t get easily distracted. The interviewer will be judging you on how you interact with the other staff and customers in the bar to determine how you might be with future customers.
Remember that people want to work with someone they like.
Don’t Forget! Bring a copy of your resume, cover letter, reference letters (if you have any) and bartending certificates you may have. Also bring a pen and paper so that you can take notes – you want to show the interviewer that you are interested in the position and are keen to get the job.
Sample Bar Interview Questions
Bar Interview Questions: Why do you want to work here?bar interview
This question is usually the opening question, and you want to nail it. Have a reason that is specific to the establishment. And not that it’s your favourite place on Saturday night and not that they are the only people hiring right now.
Play to their ego a little and say you like the style of the bar and have recognized how well it is managed from coming in as a customer. Tell them that you think the service is great and that the bar staff seem to work well together. Mention that you would like to work in a professional environment where everyone works hard, but works together.
Bar Interview Questions: Tell me about yourself.
What your interviewer is expecting is something short and sweet. Tell them where you are from, what you’re working towards and what you’ve done to get there. For example, “I’m a student. I’m working towards a degree in… My favourite part of my studies are…
If you happen to lack experience and the interviewer mentions it, respond quickly expressing how you haven’t learned years of bad habits that would have to be undone. That you’re a clean slate in the bar world and you’re ambitious to learn the trade. Tell them you believe attitude and personality is more important and you have the attitude they are looking for. If you don’t have any experience at all, you can offer to work as a bar back to start out and work your way up. Or, if you don’t have any real experience but are confident of your bartending skills, you can offer to work a shift or two for free to prove that you have what it takes to work in a fast-paced environment like the bar industry.
Bar Interview Questions: What are your strength and weaknesses?
The trick question. Go ahead and brag about what you’re good at. “I’m a great conversationalist and can find something in common with the other person quickly” or “I am very punctual, and that spills over into all my work, including returning to customers and checking up on them regularly” or “I have a very strong work ethic and take pride in what I do”.
When you highlight your weaknesses, remember they play on your strengths. For example, “I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist and may spend a little too much time perfecting something” or “I’m full of ideas and sometimes I see what I think is a more efficient way of doing things and make suggestions to coworkers that they may not want to hear” or “sometimes if its a little slow in the bar, I get engrossed in a conversation with a customer and find it hard to cut it off politely so that I can take care of my other responsibilities.”
Bar Interview Questions: Tell me about a difficult customer you had to handle and what you did to resolve the situation?
Have a story ready from your first job. For example, your first burger flipping job during high school when you were trying to save up for college. Let’s say that you had a customer that came in and always wanted to special order a burger – and it was always during peak times when you were busy in the kitchen which slowed everything down. So, you talked to the customer and made him a deal. You told him that as soon as you saw him come in, you would start his special order burger with the next set of meat you put on the grill. He would simply order the same way and then step to the side and wait for his burger. This way, I was able to start his special order when I was ready and it didn’t take a half hour for him to explain his order and for the cashier to find a way to punch it in.

THE SECRET to YOUR BARTENDING job SUCCESS -Anyway, as I’ve mention All the Time about getting a Great bartending JOB , RIGHT out of Bartenders Training Institute is basicaly 2 things about 2 things (1) Who you are [i.e., your ability, swagger,smile and ability to connect your personality] and more importantly (2) timing. MOST people dont just leave a great bartending gig –. So you really have to be extremely motivated and creative with your timing – !


You could easily be turned down at the same bar 100 days in a row. Magically, on day 101, Wesley the bartender has broken his leg or his new girlfriend left him the night before leading to his inevitable mental breakdown and subsequent obsession on instagram /facebook stalking her new love interest. The problem is, it’s extremely difficult to know that kind of detail. You’ve got to be persistent, extremely observant and detail oriented!!!. Most importantly, try to get a bit of leverage over the other 6 other graduates your. Use the tips herein.

That said, after I recommend you go to a particular venue , once you are somehow able, by some small miracle, to get a little face-time with the manager/owner responsible for signing off on you getting the job. There are very, very easy ways to blow your chances. Shall we review?

Smile, du***ss. Smile a whole lot. you need to Have a genuine smile and s Positive can do attitude ( most of you guys don't smile and always Whining) PLEAse refrain from whining !even if you’re a depressed and miserable sort of individual. I cannot stress this enough. You don’t have to be a knock’em dead with laughter funny kind of person. But, no one, not even a s**tty dive bar owner, wants an idiot with zero personality, charm, or entertainment value working behind a Bar for them – someone who always seems or looks depressed. If you’re the somber type, (go back to a cubicle ) Force yourself to be positive , upbeat , fun , friendly Stand up straight stop dragging smile during the interview. Fake it every minute you’re behind the bar. If not, you will never make i t, in bartending -
Hygiene: You’re on stage (you came to hollywood to act , right ? ) Shower, shave (or groom your shade) and fix your hair properly, press your clothes ( – depends on the establishment). Clip nails and make sure they’re not full of 5 days of dirt, earwax and co***ne. Moisturize your skin. Check your nose for boogies. Make sure you don’t have a fresh mint leaf on your tooth from your gluten free,vegan .,organic lunch. Brush your fangs and have someone test your breath to ensure it doesn’t smell like ma*****na , or ass .( so many people don't realize that when you smoke pot it stays with your clothes , hair, breadth , skin Really !
Get your teeth shiny white !. This all seems like common sense doesn’t it? You’d be shocked as to how many graduATES overlook this department.
Bone up on those obscure cocktails that you learned If you want to make big league moo-lah-lah $$$, you’ve got to come correct with dripping off the tongue knowledge,Pitbull or Beyoncé type of swagger, and that ever important smile.
Know your brands. You will likely be asked for examples of this spirit or that one. Study up. Commit several of each kind of spirit to memory.
The same goes for BEER You don’t have to be a Master Brewer. However, know the major differences between Top and Bottom Fermenting, Craft beer and Stouts.
Whiskey. Along with brand examples, you must know the key differences between Scotch, Irish, Rye, Sour Mash, Canadian, and Bourbon.
They are not the same! Many interviewers will ask. If you don’t know jack s**t about how they’re made or can’t offer any decent drink suggestions, you’re going to be s**t out of luck.
Red Wine. Similarly, you must have SOME BASIC KNOWLEGE of wines – red in particular.
Sommelier level knowledge is way overkill.
However, you should know basic French and Italian varieties and regions.
Most importantly however, is to be able to have some sort of base for a recommendation to a customer.
Know which varieties are full-bodied, light-bodied, semi-sweet, semi-sec and dry. make sure you look like a bartender !!!
Wear clothing appropriate for the venue you’re interviewing for –
critical.
Leverage your references. If you have or have had friends who worked at said location,DONT drop their names. !!!!!!
Next to your charisma, there is nothing more powerful. !!!! Most of the Best bartending jobs have been obtained via my (Cindy Benson recommendation so be positive , be engaging and Remember to Smile and 99 % percent of Success is just showing up So show up everything will workout all you need to do is show up smiling !!

Last Thursday, Koreatown’s ’80s-themed bar Break Room 86 debuted its brand-new boozy ice cream truck on its patio. Just in time for an early spring! The outdoor bar is serving up frozen treats, from Coolhaus’ cocktail-inspired ice cream sandwiches to BuzzBar’s alcohol-infused frozen bars. And remember the boozy push-up pops that debuted when Break Room 86 first opened, but then disappeared? They’re back!

The ice cream truck was actually an answer to a push-up pop dilemma. Since the main bar doesn’t have adequate space to keep the frozen treats from melting they had to chuck that idea right away. At first, Break Room 86 owners Mark and Jonnie Houston were going to do an ice cream cart that could be pushed around the venue. But next thing bar manager Christine Wiseman knew, the twins had built an ice cream truck facade right on the patio, complete with wheels and illustrated menu on the outside.

If you ever ran after an ice cream truck when you were a kid, seeing the truck for the first time will be a huge deja vu moment. The only thing it’s missing is a driver seat, engine, and the annoying ice cream truck song (we’re grateful for that).






But it does come with its own bar so the bartender/ice cream man/woman will be able to make highballs and pour shots. You can’t, however, order Break Room 86’s specialty cocktails out there but you can get those boozy push-up pops which are the equivalent of one cocktail containing 2 ounces of liquor.

There will also be bottled cocktails featuring flavors from your childhood. They’re still being developed but Wiseman hints at fizzy and fruity with orange soda and gin, grape and vodka, cherry Coke and rum.

For those who want to play it straight there is also the Chocotaco and Rocket Pop frozen treats as well as snacks like licorice ropes, Funyuns, Laffy Taffy, Twinkies, and all that other good stuff that your mom wouldn’t let you eat before.

The truck is open for business 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. But if you want to make boozy push-up pops right now, or for your own springtime party, here’s Wiseman’s recipe for the Coconut Crush Push-Up Pops made with gin and Jager.
