As part of the celebration, ODNR is seeking submissions of letters or messages Ohio service members sent to their families and loved ones 💌

These letters will be a part of a new trail called The Letters to Home Trail, that will be constructed at Mohican State Forest near the Mohican-Memorial Shrine (pictured). This shrine honors the nearly 20,000 people who died in conflicts from World War II to the present day.

The trail will include a series of signs, sharing the meaningful words Ohio's service men and women communicated home while serving in the United States military during times of conflict. The messages can be in the form of letters, emails, voicemails, or even text messages.

Submit a message: https://bit.ly/4dDfHYD

Submissions will be accepted through August 10, 2026.

1. To our Gold Star families: The 98 ceramic poppies displayed the last two years sustained some damage during storage. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 118 offered to replace them with metal poppies. All the ceramic poppies will be offered to Gold Star Family members and friends of the 98. They will be at the Vigil for you to take home. You may also contact our page at "The Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Lorain County, Ohio", or contact [email protected] to request a poppy, and we will save it for you. (36 of the Vietnam casualties are from Lorain.)

2. .R.E.W. 'brings songwriters and veterans together for private two-day workshops to capture stories of service through music.' A song composed through Project D.R.E.W. in memory of one of our 98, PFC Leo A. George from Lorain, killed on 1/5/1969, will be performed at the Vigil by the songwriter. We encourage our veterans to participate in Project D.R.E.W. https://www.projectdrew.org/

3. T-shirts listing the names of the 98, and also Agent Orange shirts, will be available for purchase.

4. Paver order forms will be available.

The 39th Annual Vigil and the Reading is Saturday, May 23, 6 PM.
