Shine's Bar Oldest bar on the beach! Operating continuously since 1912. Our hours are 8am-4am (10am, Sundays). We are at 100% capacity. Tables are sanitized after each use.

We're not messing around with Covid or the authorities enforcing Covid regulations, so here's the scoop. Guests must wear masks whenever they leave their seats. Tables are socially distanced and limited to 10 guests. We have a roped off space at the bar for guests to safely get drinks. We have fans blowing air down and have windows cracked open to keep air fresh. Our juke box is kept at a conversation-friendly volume to prevent people from yelling and spreading more particles. We have masks and hand sanitizer throughout the bar for guests and PPE equipment for staff. We also have outdoor seating, though it is not currently heated. That being said, Covid and its variants are highly contagious airborne viruses, if you are at-risk or are exposed to someone who is, we recommend you stay home. We also recommend you get the vaccine. Most of our staff and regulars have been vaccinated, and they are surly as ever. Please be safe, we're almost done with this crap. Now for the fun stuff, Shine's is a classic neighborhood pub that provides a welcome alternative to the dance clubs that line the strip. Rounded out with a pool table, dartboard and juke box, it's the perfect place to drink with your friends. We have a wide selection of locally brewed beers and make hand-crafted, classic cocktails. A very new and very exciting piece of Shine's history uncovered! Pictured is Dorothy O'Shaunnessy and (we think) the original owner, Eugene Shine. The photo appears to be taken in the 1940s, but any notes are welcome! Feels like they were coming in for Wednesday pool, Thursday night trivia, or Friday night buy-one, get-one happy hour!

UPDATE: So! Thanks to your notes in the comments, and some independent research, we feel comfortable dating this photo to the 40s, likely pre-47. We know from the paint on the exterior and from old Jimmy Maye photos that the picture was taken before Easter of 1953, when Jimmy got back from the Korean War. Two other people pointed to other evidence that it would date to the 1940s: Chrissy NY noticed her 1940s-style hair and clothes, and Jerry Morgan pointed out the keg - which is in a style used before the 1950s.

Lastly, we have the "wolf head" in the window. Marty Carlo ID'ed it as the Fox Head Brewery logo. Fox Head was based out of Wisconsin and was one of the few breweries to survive Prohibition. (Many breweries, if not brands, closed during Prohibition and didn't resume full operations until well-after the 1940s war effort had ended - namely the 50s/60s.) Fox Head not only survived that era, but as a result was able to grow in the 1940s. New York was one of the areas it expanded distribution to and pushed out marketing materials in. Now, this company reworked itself a few times and appears to have had a rebrand and label shift in 1946. (Ads from 1947-1949 feature a different fox head illustration.) If that's the case, and knowing that Mike Delury bought the bar in 1946, it seems fair to say that this photo is from the early-mid 1940s, no later that 1946.

And if we do confirm that it's Eugene Shine in the pic, we can factor in that he died in January of 1946.
