Robert Ellis has never been particularly interested in staying in one lane.

Across five solo albums, the Texas songwriter has moved through sounds and personas that his own bio describes as everything from “Redneck Steely Dan” to “Lone Star Liberace,” while the songwriting underneath it all has earned praise from NPR, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

His latest turn stripped nearly everything away. Yesterday’s News was recorded live to tape in just two days, with Ellis accompanied by little more than nylon-string guitar, upright bass and occasional percussion.

Joshua Ray Walker was supposed to play Live From The Divide in 2024.

A lot has happened since then.

This spring, Walker released Ain’t Dead Yet, his most personal record to date. After years of writing songs through the lives of fictional characters, the Dallas songwriter turned the lens toward himself, making a record that was already underway before a cancer diagnosis changed the course of his life.

Now, he’s headed to Livingston for two nights at Live From The Divide.

Machines Will Never Learn to Make Mistakes Like Me.

It’s a fitting title for Will Varley’s latest album, especially for a songwriter who has spent much of his career trying to make sense of what it means to be human.

“I tend to use songwriting to try to make sense of things, to help me navigate through my life,” Varley said in a recent interview. “If those songs are useful to other people, then that is a great privilege.”

Across seven albums, the English singer-songwriter has built an international following with songs that find their way through relationships, life on the road and the strange task of carrying on with everyday life while the wider world feels increasingly uncertain.

Along the way, he’s gone from open mics in South London to stages including the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury, with more than 50 million streams and support from artists including Billy Bragg, Frank Turner and Adam Duritz.

Will Varley comes to Live From The Divide on Saturday, Oct. 10.

There’s more behind Joshua Ray Walker’s return to the stage than a new run of tour dates.

Thank You for Listening, a short documentary presented by Texas Monthly, follows Walker through one of the hardest chapters of his life as he confronts a life-altering cancer diagnosis, considers the legacy he wants to leave behind and works toward a return to the Grand Ole Opry.

The film shares its name with the closing track on Walker’s new album, Ain’t Dead Yet, a deeply personal record shaped by the past few years and the perspective that came with making it through them.

After screenings at film festivals in the U.S. and abroad, Thank You for Listening became available to stream worldwide through Yahoo this month.

It’s a powerful look at the person behind the songs, and one worth watching before Joshua Ray Walker joins us for two nights at Live From The Divide on Sept. 11 + 12.

Jeffrey Foucault’s latest record began with two very different kinds of loss.

His longtime drummer and best friend, Billy Conway, died of cancer in 2021. Years earlier, a fire on the Universal Studios lot destroyed master recordings representing decades of American music.

On The Universal Fire, Foucault brings those losses together, exploring what happens to the things we make, what we leave behind, and what any of it means while we’re here.

Recorded live in one room with a band that includes members of Calexico and Bon Iver, the album marked Foucault’s first collection of entirely new material since 2018.

This September, he returns to Live From The Divide.

JUST ANNOUNCED: This October, Livingston songwriter Lena Rich celebrates a new record right here at home.

On Friday, Oct. 23, Lena and her band take the stage at Live From The Divide for the release of Emerald City, a new album shaped by heartbreak, hope and the complicated space between accepting the world as it is and believing it can still be something better.

Rooted in alt-country but distinctly her own, Lena pairs sharp observation and a little dry wit with warm vocals, rich guitars and songs that know when to leave room to breathe.

Emerald City arrives this fall. We’re looking forward to celebrating it with her in the listening room.

Two banjos might tell you something about The Lowest Pair.

They also might send you in completely the wrong direction.

Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee met as two banjo players performing with different bands at the same bluegrass festival. What grew out of that meeting is quieter, stranger and more expansive than the setup might suggest, built around two distinct voices, close harmonies and songs that leave plenty of room to breathe.

More than a decade later, The Lowest Pair are still finding new places to take that sound. Their newest album, Always as Young as We’ll Ever Be, is their first in six years and brings even more texture to the world they’ve built together.

A lot of names have passed across this marquee this summer.

And behind every one of them was a night in the listening room.

From Dale Watson and Ken Pomeroy to The Droptines, Ray Benson, Liam St. John, Suzy Bogguss and Anna Tivel, July and August have brought a pretty remarkable run of artists through the Empire.

Some nights sold out. Some introduced us to new faces in the room. Some brought back people who already knew exactly why they wanted to be here. All of them became part of the story of Live From The Divide in Livingston.

And we’re not done yet.

September brings two nights with Joshua Ray Walker and a night with Jeffrey Foucault, followed by The Lowest Pair and John Moreland in October and Fred Eaglesmith and Robert Ellis in November.

There’s a particular kind of concert that asks very little of you except to show up and pay attention.

Anna Tivel has talked about wanting her audiences to feel taken care of, to be swept up in the music and given the space to simply listen. We’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Anna to Live From The Divide before, and there’s something about the way she writes and performs that feels especially at home in a listening room.

Tomorrow night, we get to welcome her back.
