Some plastic clarity coming to Oregon
Last week, Governor Kate Brown signed the Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act (ordeq.org/sb582) into law.
It requires packaging producers to share responsibility for efficiently managing their products after use. Oregon is only the second state in the U.S. to adopt a producer responsibility policy like this for packaging, paper products and food serviceware!
The new law also establishes a single list of materials that can be recycled anywhere in Oregon in order to reduce public confusion about what can and can’t be recycled. It goes into effect Jan. 1, 2022 and program changes begin as of July 2025.
