Just over a year ago, we opened our doors with a simple belief: a community gathering spot would be better than another empty storefront.
We made the plans and did the math. We knew that even on our busiest nights, we would likely only break even. Because we both have other successful businesses, we could afford to give this idea a chance. We were willing to invest our time and resources in something we believed could help downtown Liberty.
Part of that decision rested on the promises we heard from those running for mayor and city council. They spoke about supporting local businesses, bringing life back downtown, and taking the city in a better direction. We took those commitments seriously and invested with the expectation that action would follow.
Over the past year, the support and follow-through we were promised have not materialized. Campaign promises helped create the confidence to invest. Keeping those promises matters to the people who put their own money, time, and livelihoods behind that confidence.
The final straw was a request to put a b**r truck directly in front of our business for a city event. For a business already working hard to bring people downtown and sell food and drinks, being asked to accommodate competing b**r sales at our front door made it difficult to see how the city’s decisions reflected its stated support for local businesses.
That request brought the larger issue into focus: we were continuing to invest in a vision that city leadership had encouraged, but its actions were not supporting.
With our state licenses expiring at the end of November, we had to decide whether to commit another year of money, evenings, weekends, and time away from family. Based on the past year, we cannot justify doing so.
We’re proud of what No Vacancy became. To everyone who joined us for dinner, tried a new b**r, brought friends, enjoyed the music, or made us part of your week: thank you. You made this place worth opening.
We still have a few good weeks ahead. Come spend some time with us, enjoy the music and unique b**rs, and help us give No Vacancy a proper farewell.
Our last night will be Saturday, November 28, featuring Wasted W**e. We’ll go out with a bang.
See you soon at No Vacancy.
