BEHIND THE BOTTLE: BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY

This week, we’re going Behind the Bottle with one of the most recognizable names in bourbon. Buffalo Trace sits along the Kentucky River in Frankfort, Kentucky, on land tied to more than 200 years of wh***ey-making history. The name “Buffalo Trace” comes from the pathways, or “traces” once created by migrating buffalo through the area.

The distillery has operated under several names over the years, including O.F.C. Distillery and George T. Stagg Distillery, before officially becoming Buffalo Trace Distillery in 1999.

And Buffalo Trace is responsible for a lot more than its namesake bourbon. Some familiar bottles made there include:

Bourbon 101: Wh***ey vs. Bourbon

Getting into bourbon can feel intimidating at first. There are so many different bottles, proofs, mash bills, age statements, and terms to learn. That’s why every Monday, we’re starting Bourbon 101: a simple way to break down some of the most common bourbon questions.

First up: What’s the difference between wh***ey and bourbon?

The easiest way to remember it is:
All bourbon is wh***ey, but not all wh***ey is bourbon.

Wh***ey is the larger category. It’s a distilled spirit made from fermented grains, which can include corn, rye, wheat, and barley. Different types of wh***ey have different rules depending on where and how they’re made.

Bourbon, on the other hand, has to meet specific requirements to be called bourbon:
🥃 It must be made in the United States.
🌽 Its mash bill must contain at least 51% corn.
🪵 It must be aged in new, charred oak containers.
🔥 It cannot be distilled higher than 160 proof.
🛢️ It must enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof.
🥃 It must be bottled at a minimum of 80 proof.
🚫 Nothing can be added for flavor or color other than water used to adjust proof.

One common misconception is that bourbon has to be made in Kentucky. It doesn’t. Bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States, although Kentucky is certainly famous for producing it. So when you’re looking at the shelf, think of wh***ey as the big family and bourbon as one specific type within that family.

The Henderson family has been crafting world-class wh***ey for generations. Every bottle of True Story carries that legacy of Kentucky wh***ey craftsmanship forward, reimagined for a new generation of storytellers.

Wes Henderson comes from one of the most recognized families in modern American bourbon history. His father, Lincoln Henderson, was a Bourbon Hall of Fame inductee and legendary master distiller whose career included decades at Brown-Forman, where he played an important role in the development of some of the industry’s most recognizable wh***eys.

In 2010, Wes and Lincoln Henderson co-founded Angel’s Envy, combining generations of traditional Kentucky bourbon knowledge with a willingness to do things differently. Angel’s Envy would go on to become one of the most recognized names in modern American wh***ey.

Today, Wes continues that family story alongside the next generation of Hendersons with True Story Wh***ey.
