Hello Gaslight Family (especially our trans siblings),
I want to open with an apology for the late date of this statement. Between health challenges, both existential and biological, it has taken some time for us to get our feet back on solid ground and determine how best to respond to SB 244, as well as how we can directly support our community in the fight ahead to overturn this unjust law.
It is my belief that the state does not define us, but it can restrain us. Trans Kansans have been placed at the forefront of a wave of hostility and xenophobia masquerading as an attempt to protect women and children. The transparency through which that hatred shines is a gossamer mirror of past tragedies, reminding us how easily fear and othering can be turned into policy.
We owe it to ourselves to protect our neighbors and our communities. The only way that happens is if we choose to work together to lift each other up, not hold each other down.
As a child born in the shadow of the hill, we can do better. We've seen it, and I believe we are not so far down this path that we’ve lost what makes it worth fighting for.
To reaffirm: Gaslight Gardens is a trans-owned business. We are an intentional safe space for people of all gender identities and expressions. We welcome the full tapestry of our community under our roof and there is no room for bigotry or othering at Gaslight. Any guest who harasses or targets someone because of their gender identity, expression, race, background, or personal identity is not welcome at Gaslight and will be asked to leave.
Now, a few updates and announcements in response to this moment:
First, many of you already know we have only one bathroom, much to our chagrin, but it has always been open to everyone. That will remain the case. Effective immediately, even if you aren’t a customer, if you need a safe restroom, simply let our bar staff know and you will be welcome to use our facilities.
Second, Tuesday remains our Service and Social Industry Night. If you work in mental health, crisis support, social work, or any of the many roles that keep our community safety nets functioning, we want you to know that our doors are open to you. This is our small way of saying thank you for the work you do to keep people from slipping through the cracks.
Finally, beginning next week, Wednesday nights will become a recurring gathering focused on holding space for our q***r and trans neighbors. Each week we will donate 10% of proceeds to a local trans-focused charity. We will also prepare a non-alcoholic option free of charge for those who need community but may be resource-limited.
These nights won’t be about loud music or packed crowds. They will simply be about community, no strings attached.
In closing, please hold your trans neighbors and family close. While the initial shock has begun to pass, this is a long road, and they will need all the support they can get.
If you’ve read this far, thank you. Thank you for supporting trans-owned businesses, for supporting your neighbors, and for caring enough to listen.
With all my love,
Chesha F.
PS: If you are interested in working with us to support our community on a Wednesday or any other time please don't hesitate to reach out.
