NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
INDUCTION TRIBUTE
THE 1982 NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY WRESTLING TEAM
AND HEAD COACH RALPH SZYDLIK
Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, former athletes, coaches, alumni, family members, and friends of New Mexico Highlands University:
Tonight, we gather not simply to remember a wrestling season, but to honor a legacy.
There are teams that win.
There are teams that succeed.
And then there are teams whose accomplishments become part of the very fabric of a university's history.
The 1982 New Mexico Highlands University Wrestling Team was such a team.
Its story is one of determination, sacrifice, courage, and excellence. But above all, it is a story of leadership—and at the center of that story stands Head Coach Ralph Szydlik.
Great coaches do far more than teach athletes how to compete. They shape character. They establish standards. They challenge young men to believe in themselves when others may not. They take talent and transform it into purpose, discipline, and achievement.
Coach Ralph Szydlik understood that mission.
In his fourth year at the helm of the New Mexico Highlands wrestling program, Szydlik was not merely coaching a team. He was building a program and establishing a standard of excellence that would leave an enduring mark on Cowboy wrestling.
His philosophy was rooted in discipline, preparation, accountability, teamwork, and an unwavering belief in his athletes.
He understood that success was never given.
It had to be earned.
Every practice mattered. Every match mattered. Every sacrifice mattered.
And he demanded that his wrestlers embrace the responsibility of representing something larger than themselves—the name, tradition, and pride of New Mexico Highlands University.
Under his leadership, a determined group of wrestlers answered that challenge.
What followed became one of the most memorable seasons in the history of New Mexico Highlands University wrestling.
A TEAM THAT ROSE ABOVE EXPECTATIONS
Competing in the demanding Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the Cowboys entered a conference filled with nationally respected wrestling programs.
They were surrounded by tradition.
They were surrounded by champions.
But they were not intimidated.
The Cowboys earned an outstanding third-place finish at the RMAC Tournament, finishing behind perennial powerhouse and national champion Adams State and nationally recognized Fort Lewis.
That third-place finish was more than a tournament result.
It was a statement.
It announced that New Mexico Highlands had earned its place among the strongest wrestling programs in the region.
But the Cowboys were not finished.
THE NATIONAL STAGE
The 1982 season continued to build toward an achievement that would become a defining moment in the history of the program.
Five New Mexico Highlands wrestlers qualified for the NAIA National Wrestling Championships.
Five athletes carried the Cowboy name onto the national stage, representing not only themselves, but their teammates, their coaches, their families, and their university.
Against 65 teams from across the nation, the Cowboys battled their way to a remarkable 27th-place finish.
That achievement established a benchmark for New Mexico Highlands wrestling and represented one of the most significant accomplishments in the history of the program.
But numbers alone cannot tell the story.
A ranking cannot measure the sweat poured into preparation.
A tournament finish cannot measure the sacrifices made by athletes and their families.
A statistic cannot measure the character required to continue fighting when the competition is at its toughest.
The 1982 Cowboys earned their place in history one practice, one match, and one sacrifice at a time.
THE TRUE MEASURE OF A COACH
Yet the greatest measure of Coach Szydlik's success cannot be found in a record book.
It can be found in the men his wrestlers became.
Coach Szydlik understood that his responsibility went beyond developing better wrestlers.
He was developing better men.
The wrestling room became a classroom for life.
His athletes learned that adversity was not something to fear, but something to confront.
They learned that discipline had to come before achievement.
They learned that loyalty to teammates mattered.
They learned to accept responsibility.
They learned to prepare when nobody was watching.
And they learned perhaps the most important lesson of all:
Never surrender simply because the challenge is difficult.
Those lessons did not end when their wrestling careers ended.
They followed these young men into their families, professions, communities, and lives.
That is the true legacy of a great coach.
THE NEW MEXICO CONNECTION
A significant part of the foundation of the 1982 team came from the proud wrestling tradition of Albuquerque's Valley High School.
Among those who contributed to the Cowboys' success were Gabriel Lucero and his brothers Gilbert and Dennis, along with David Luna, John Chavez, and John Romero.
These young men arrived at New Mexico Highlands with impressive wrestling backgrounds and a desire to compete.
But they became much more than individual athletes.
They became teammates.
They became brothers.
And together, under Coach Szydlik's leadership, they became part of something larger than themselves.
They became Cowboys.
A LEGACY THAT ENDURES
Tonight, we honor every wrestler who sacrificed, trained, competed, and proudly wore the New Mexico Highlands uniform.
We honor the teammates who pushed one another to become better.
We honor the families and supporters who stood behind these young men.
And we honor the coach whose vision brought them together and whose leadership gave them the confidence to believe that extraordinary achievement was possible.
Coach Ralph Szydlik did not simply coach wrestling.
He built discipline.
He demanded excellence.
He developed character.
He inspired belief.
And he created a standard by which future generations could measure themselves.
The legacy of the 1982 team is therefore not confined to one season.
It lives in the history of New Mexico Highlands University.
It lives in the wrestling program.
It lives in the standards established by those who came before.
And it lives in every athlete who has worn the Cowboy uniform since.
A PLACE IN HISTORY
There are moments in the history of an athletic program when everything comes together—the right coach, the right athletes, the right preparation, and the right belief.
1982 was one of those moments.
The Cowboys proved that greatness does not belong only to the programs with the greatest reputations.
Greatness belongs to those willing to work for it.
To those willing to sacrifice for it.
To those willing to believe in one another.
And to those willing to stand together when the challenge is greatest.
The 1982 New Mexico Highlands University Wrestling Team did exactly that.
Their accomplishment was not simply a third-place finish.
It was not simply five national qualifiers.
It was not simply a 27th-place national finish among 65 teams.
It was the creation of a legacy.
A legacy built through discipline.
A legacy forged through competition.
A legacy strengthened by brotherhood.
And a legacy guided by a coach who believed in the extraordinary potential of his athletes.
Tonight, we proudly honor Coach Ralph Szydlik and the 1982 New Mexico Highlands University Wrestling Team.
We honor their determination.
We honor their courage.
We honor their accomplishments.
And we honor the lasting impact they made upon Cowboy athletics.
Some teams are remembered because they won.
Some are remembered because they broke records.
But the truly great teams are remembered because they changed what people believed was possible.
The 1982 Cowboys changed the standard.
Their season was remarkable.
Their achievement was historic.
Their character was enduring.
And their legacy belongs forever to the proud tradition of New Mexico Highlands University.
Tonight, we do not simply remember the 1982 Cowboys.
We celebrate them.
We honor them.
And we welcome them, with great pride and profound respect, into the enduring history of New Mexico Highlands University athletics.
