Meet Phil Gushrowski, the new owner of Hilltop Bar and Grill. Phil is excited and proud to own a bar that has been in the community for so many years. Hilltop, fondly know as Sam’s Hilltop, had been a part of the Gene “Sam” Samuelson family for over 40 years, and he hopes to maintain the downhome, neighborhood style of service that made the bar such a popular place for many in the community.

Phil has many years of experience in the bar industry. People in La Porte will remember him from his years as one of the owners of Lenard’s Bar. Most recently he served as general manager of The Clubhouse and Sunset Grill in Michigan City.

Phil is from Michigan City, but has called La Porte home for over 25 years. And having three children who graduated from La Porte High School, I think we can safely say he is a proud Slicer!

Tonight marks the end of an era for Sam’s Hilltop Bar. For over 40 years the Samuelson family has owned and operated this little neighborhood bar at 502 Pulaski St.

The neighborhood has changed over the years, but the bar has mostly remained the same cozy and friendly establishment with a Cheers-type atmosphere. We even had our own Norm at one time, but his name was Stanley aka Stash!

We have a lot of great memories with our family and friends who have visited over the years. We want to thank you for your support and friendship, we are forever grateful.

A new era starts tomorrow. Please give Phil and his crew the support you have given our family over the years. The Hilltop name lives on which we are very happy about. Our family is proud to have had Sam’s Hilltop in our family for as long as we have.

We want to thank all of our employees past and present, especially Melissa, Lizzy, Michelle, and Joe & Justina. We couldn’t have gotten through these last few years without them. We survived through the pandemic because of our staff and loyal customers!

This Friday (2/3) will be our last Friday.

The bar will be under new management soon. Thank you for supporting us all these years!

Doug and Vicky will be there Friday night at 6:30pm if you’d like to join in honoring the memory of our bars namesake, Sam!

His favorite thing was a dip of ice cream so stop in for some ice cream and cake! Oh yeah and a beer or two. Sam would want you to! 🍺
