JUKE JOINTS affected the cultural structure of the Southern United States, giving African Americans a place to get away from the pressures of Society; people socialized with friends while eating, drinking and eventually giving them a voice. The blues were born in in these ramshackle buildings of the rural South. — "The term "juke"—sometimes spelled "jook" is believed to originate from an African-derived Gullah word meaning disorderly.

Hey GUYS ! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Im editing some LIVE GIGS the Juke Joint Jokers have done since I returned to the West Coast.

In addition I have recorded some "new" material, these are originals that are more along the lines of THE METERS and NEVILL BROTHERS and LITTLE FEAT and as Fate or Karma would have it speaking of LITTLE FEAT, none other than LITTLE FEAT bassist 'KENNY GRADNEY was featured on "4" of the tracks.

The CALIFORNIA version of THE JUKE JOINT JOKERS will be heard soon, a result of the numerous gigs we did upon my arrival back in S. Cal.

Please stay in touch.

Meanwhile, "back at the ranch, here is one I wrote and sang when we recorded back in Annapolis Maryland. Appropriately titled "Mr Wrong, the "Slide" guitar is in Open G, my first attempt to record in this tuning as my previous efforts were all done in "standard " tuning.

Please enjoy !

In addition I have the studio recordings made with Kenny Gradney, the brilliant and massively soulful bassist from the legendary "Little Feat"' Tris Imboden, drummer for Chicago, Michael McDonald, Al Jarreau and Kenny Loggins, Gerry Duran from "Los Duran" percussionist Terry "Tiaga Das Gardner, who has played with the legendary Jazz band "The Crusaders", and my humble self.

I also have many recordings from past versions of the Juke Joint Jokers, both live and studio !

So stay tuned,

Peace and Blessings to you all !

Well Face Book says I have "31 new views", and thats great. We the Juke Joint Jokers have been on a sabbatical recharging and doing some writing and some composing.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, here is something I recorded down in Texas with a wonderful Austin band called "I-Tex". This is not a traditional "Blues" as it were, but we all know what Miles Davis said"Its all BLUES !"

This composition features the massively funky and soulful "Jon Smith" from "Edgar Winters White Trash band

Jon was the chief soloist and tenor and alto saxophone player in the horn section and it was an honor to play and record with him.

Produced and arranged by my old friend, the sublimely gifted bassist/vocalist/composer Vernon Porter, who's credits include Kenny Loggins, Dave Mason, Bette Midler, Tim Weisberg among others, Vernon asked me to play "Slide" guitar on this cut and I leaped at the opportunity to simultaneously play with an old friend and a legend!

I was never a big session guy on the count of of I never was able to read anything but simplest of chord charts. I was offered this because the guitar players didnt play "Slide" or Bottleneck.

The session, my first outside of my own band demos was fraught with difficulty, mainly because I was "choking" under the pressure. After too many passes to even remember Vernon cast a somber glance in my direction with the sobering:

"Murf, I love ya and we know you play your ass off, but, you're staring to cost me money, so if you dont cop this next track you'll have to cop a walk!"

I "gulped", took a hit off some Ho**ey Killer W**d that was going around the studio, shotgunner a Tall Boy and hit that Be-Bop/Dotted 8th Note phrase and the place exploded, as much in relief as anything else LOL.

So here it is, years later. Needless to say it could have been better, but Im very proud of it. Hope ya'll dig it !

Cheers

For those coming of late here, please feel free,in addition to listening to the website, to pull up my own personal Face Book page K.C. Murphy for sound bytes not offered here.

For example the session I did in Texas w/ my old friend and musical comrade "Vernon Porter", a bona fide musical genius who produced, arranged and engineered the session which featured musical legend "Jon Smith" on tenor sax and myself on slide guitar.

The track "Flat Creek" by the band "I-Tex" is a great composition an innovative approach, combining a Reggae rhythm w/ a subtle sort of Little Feat vibe and Country-Western lyrics.

The horn chart is awesome as is everything else. As for my efforts, I did the best I could.

I appreciate all of the people who have come here to the Juke Joint Joker page here at Face Book. I am "left-handed" at best when it comes to Cyber -Speak, but doing the best I can.

I have been mired in pedestrian activities and health related issues that have stymied my efforts but have been editing some of the Joker live shows from Mozambique Steakhouse during our residency there just before Covid.

In addition I hope to announce some new bookings that will round out the years end and wish the very best to all of you in all your endeavors.
