Beers come and go in this business. We’ve made probably a hundred different beers through the years. Some stick, and some fade. Some fade for a reason, and some simply get put in the back burner, for no reason at all. Today we bring back Crispy Coast. This was an idea I came up with, around the start of the hazy burnout at the tail end of Covid after listening to a wonderful podcast on with owner/brewer of . They mentioned they used a Chico yeast to do sort of a quick lager that mimics some of the characteristics of a traditional lager yeast. It was intriguing, so we tried it, and crispy coast was born.
Sort of a hybrid lager, west coast pale ale, and English bitter, we simply call this an “American Bitter Ale”. It starts with a base of light English malts from and some fluffy oats. In the boil and whirlpool we use vermont grown nugget hops from .valley.hops along with a bit of English East Kent Goldings. It’s fermented cool with a California ale yeast. We package this unfined and unfiltered. It’s such a cool little beer. Balanced, crisp, spicy, crackery, with a hint of fruitiness from the nugget and a gentle hop bite on the finish. It really throws lager vibes.
I’ve missed this beer and am happy to have it back. It’s totally untraditional but super traditional at the same time. The creative side and ingenuity is what’s so attractive about being a brewer along with being a part of the hive mind that is this industry and learning from each other.
Why the name? Well, this side of lake, the shore that we sit about a half mile from, is unofficially named the crispy coast!
Four packs are available and with draft coming soon.
