A great spot to check out when you are in the Outer Banks.

North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is one of the few places on Earth where endangered red wolves still roam free in the wild! Sitting just inland from the Outer Banks, this huge refuge covers about 152,000 acres on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula. The land is made up of swamp woods, wetlands, bogs, marshes, and twisting canals and creeks. It’s one of the most wild and untamed areas on the East Coast. Wildlife here includes black bears, bobcats, river otters, alligators, white-tailed deer, red wolves, bald eagles, owls, and many kinds of wading birds. You can visit the refuge all year long and explore it in several ways, including hiking trails, scenic drives, kayaking routes, and open-air tram rides. The Wildlife Drive is especially known for bear sightings, and a 15-mile paddling trail system lets you see the refuge from the water.
