Not every vine gets an easy life.

This steep section of our Ballfield Syrah vineyard forces the vines to work for every drop of water and every nutrient they find. The rocky slopes naturally limit vigor, producing smaller berries with thicker skins and concentrated flavors.

The angle of the hillside matters, too. Steep exposures capture sunlight differently throughout the day, helping Syrah achieve full ripeness while the cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay preserves freshness and structure. Good drainage prevents the vines from becoming overly vigorous, allowing them to focus their energy where it matters most—into the fruit.

The result is a wine with depth, intensity, and character that can only come from mountain-grown Syrah. Dark fruit, savory spice, structure, and a sense of place that speaks directly of Moon Mountain.

Sometimes the best wines come from the toughest ground.

Late May on Moon Mountain feels pretty special right now. Warm days have settled over the estate, while the evenings still cool down as the sun drops behind the hills. That swing between sunshine and cool nights is exactly what the vines love this time of year — helping the grapes develop slowly, holding onto their natural acidity while building depth, structure, and character from the very beginning of the growing season.

Our estate is unique, each turn presents something new. Farming this land takes a lot of patience and detail. That’s what comes across in the wines.

Happy Earth Day.

We are fortunate to care for a small piece of rugged, rocky ground—land that is a challenge to farm, and in return, gives everything it has. Farming at elevation, with shifting exposures and soils that challenge the vines, reminds us daily that great wine starts long before the cellar. It starts with respect for the land, thoughtful stewardship, and a commitment to doing things the right way, even when it’s not the easy way.

Today, we take a moment to appreciate the place that makes it all possible—and the opportunity to turn it into something worth sharing.

Our tasting room in the heart of Kenwood Village Plaza is pouring daily and we invite you to come enjoy our award-winning wines. Choose your path: a classic flight that walks showcases the diversity of our wines, or lean into the mountain with a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon flight built from Moon Mountain fruit.

Reservations are encouraged, but if you find yourself nearby, the door’s open. Walk in, pull up, and taste what we’ve been working on.

Spring has arrived on Moon Mountain—and the estate is starting to speak again.

After a warmer-than-usual February and March, the vines have woken early. Bud break is underway, lining the rows with fresh green growth—one of the first true signals of the vintage ahead. Up here, where elevation, rocky soils, and the pull of the San Pablo Bay shape everything, the season always tells its own story.

These early moments matter. The timing of bud break can influence the entire growing cycle—impacting ripening, balance, and ultimately what finds its way into the glass.

For now, it’s the quiet energy of spring.

The 2026 growing season is officially underway here at Ty Caton Vineyards on Moon Mountain.

This year, we saw warmer-than-normal temperatures through February and March, which played a key role in moving the vines out of dormancy earlier than usual. As soil temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, the vines begin to “wake up,” pushing sap through the canes and initiating bud break—the first visible sign of a new vintage.

An earlier start to the season can influence the entire growing cycle, from shoot development and flowering to veraison and ultimately harvest timing. While it brings the potential for a longer growing season, it also requires careful attention in the vineyard, as young shoots are more vulnerable to early spring weather shifts.

Now, as green growth begins to line the rows across the estate, our focus turns to vineyard management—monitoring vine balance, canopy development, and the conditions that will shape the fruit in the months ahead.

Each season on Moon Mountain tells a different story, and 2026 is already off to an early and promising start.

We’re proud to be part of , a celebration of spring across some of the most beautiful vineyards in the region. Join us at our tasting room and visit our friends in the area while you enjoy a day filled with great wine, good friends, and a little something extra at every winery.
