“Sounds of the Zoo Second Line” with Great Lakes Brass, Featuring Honorary Grand Marshal City Commissioner Jeanne Hess
New Orleans-style street parade to wind through downtown Kalamazoo from the Radisson Plaza Hotel to Bronson Park on Friday, September 25
KALAMAZOO, MI — Sounds of the Zoo is bringing a taste of New Orleans to downtown Kalamazoo with a “SotZ Second Line & Happy Hour” featuring Great Lakes Brass, set for Friday, September 25, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM. The free, all-ages event begins at the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites Kalamazoo and processes through downtown to Bronson Park, where it will culminate in a stage set featuring Chris Canas, Yellowhouse, and Desmond Jones.
A second line is a New Orleans brass band tradition in which a band leads a joyful street parade and members of the public — the “second line” — join in behind, often waving parasols and handkerchiefs and dancing along the route.
Schedule of Events
3:00 PM — Sounds of the Zoo Second Line Happy Hour kicks off in the Radisson’s Lobby Bar, with specialty drinks and a light bite food menu, plus parasols, beads, and hankies for sale from Great Lakes Brass to help guests join the parade in style. Printed route cards, provided by Great Lakes Brass, will detail the parade path and its significance.
4:00 PM — SotZ Second Line starts with Great Lakes Brass performing a 30-minute set in the Lobby Bar, offering a short introduction to second line tradition and an open invitation for guests to join the procession. The set will also include the introduction of the parade’s honorary Grand Marshal, City Commissioner Jeanne Hess.
4:30 PM — The second line departs the Radisson, parading through the lobby and downtown mall on its way to Bronson Park.
5:00 PM — The parade arrives at Bronson Park, where Great Lakes Brass plays a stage set alongside performers Chris Canas, Yellowhouse, and Desmond Jones.

Thanks Mark, Second Wave, and of course all you listeners! Martini's doesn't have the best anything , besides our Patrons, and our house band, The Bird Seed Salesman. Aretha chose to sing Skylark on the New Steve Allen Show in 1964 the Queen's breakout television performance!

On Friday nights at Martini's, The Birdseed Salesmen's jazz drifts across the wildflower-edged patio where conversations about sled dogs, art weirdos, punk rock, and everyday life reveal the quirky sense of place that makes Vine unlike anywhere else in town.
