Our mission: To celebrate chamber music—the enriching, intimate music of small ensembles—through performances by renowned guest artists and educational outreach across the breadth of our community. Fontana Chamber Arts is dedicated to the presentation of quality traditional and nontraditional chamber music performances, community outreach, the commissioning of new works for small ensembles, and collaboration with other arts presenters.

Welcome Dr. Sophié van der Westhuizen as the new executive and artistic director for Fontana Chamber Arts beginning September 1!

After a national search, Fontana Chamber Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of Sophié van der Westhuizen as its next Executive and Artistic Director. Dr. van der Westhuizen is a Kalamazoo-based pianist, arts educator, and nonprofit leader whose career spans performance, pedagogy, and organizational administration at the highest levels. A Steinway Artist and co-founder of the Westhuizen Piano Duo, she holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and Pedagogy and has performed extensively across the United States and internationally. Her administrative career includes serving as Director of ArtsConnect for the Cleveland International Piano Competition, which included all concerts, festival, and community engagement events. She has also served as Chair of the Keyboard Division at Heidelberg University.

The Board of Directors is confident Dr. van der Westhuizen has the artistic expertise to lead programming, the administrative experience to manage operations, and the relational presence to represent Fontana effectively with donors, artist agents, and the broader community. She will officially assume the position on September 1, 2026, but will begin an onboarding process in June, working with outgoing director Brad Wong. In his retirement, Mr. Wong will continue to be involved with Fontana in an advisory capacity.

The Ariel Quartet, known for its virtuosic and impassioned performances, has captivated audiences worldwide for over 25 years. Formed as teenagers, the Ariel Quartet is now Faculty Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music and recent recipient of Chamber Music America’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award.
