It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of our beloved founder, Mark Smutek, following complications related to Lewy Body Dementia. This progressive neurodegenerative disorder affects thinking, movement, behavior, and mood. As a result, Mark faced immense challenges and obstacles in a short amount of time, but he faced them with strength and dignity.

Mark was more than the founder of Water Street Coffee—he was its heart, its visionary, and a driving force behind every major milestone over the past 32 years. What began as a charming coffee shop grew into a respected, enduring company that reflects his values of integrity, innovation, and care for people within our community.

The suddenness of this loss has deeply impacted us all. Yet, we take comfort in the extraordinary legacy Mark leaves behind: a company built to last; a culture of excellence; and a collective that is stronger because of his leadership. We remain committed to carrying his vision forward with the same passion and purpose that defined his life’s work.

As a company, we are grieving and ask for patience as more information becomes available. Further details regarding services and opportunities to honor Mark’s memory will be shared in the coming days.

We extend our deepest condolences to Mark’s family and all who knew and admired him. He will be missed, while his impact lives on.
