🔥 Before Jupiter had a modern fire department, it had a bar that doubled as emergency dispatch!

When Gerald “Jerry” Crooks arrived in Jupiter in 1950, his brother Ralph (our very own Ralph) was already a local fixture. Ralph operated a fishing camp near the old Damon Bridge, where Ralph’s Place became famous for hamburgers, fish burgers, hush puppies and a few “bar refreshments.” 🍔🍺

But Ralph wasn’t only serving the community—he was also Chief of the Jupiter Volunteer Fire Department!

According to Jerry, the fire district was practically run from Ralph’s Bar. When firefighters were needed, residents called the bar. Talk about answering the call of duty!

The department’s first firehouse was a shed on Alternate A1A, and its equipment included a used school bus, a 4x4 Dodge with a 280-gallon water tank and five-gallon water packs. It wasn’t fancy, but Jupiter’s volunteers made it work—and by 1967, the department was recognized as one of Florida’s biggest, best and most efficient.

Ralph later moved his business to Center Street, where you can still see “Ralph’s Standup Bar” today.
