Hello Everyone!

Due to a series of unfortunate events, Black Art; Real Stories (B.A.R.S.) will be canceling all events for the rest of the semester. We regret to inform that the Spring 2019 Issue 5 release has also been canceled. Although there are changes in management and a new Editor in Chief has been assigned, there are still available positions on our Executive Board and Performer’s Team. We are seeking individuals willing and able to commit and dedicate their time. As for now, the number of positions available for the Executive Board and Performer’s Team will vary. In the meantime, as an organization, we will continue to show our community’s Black Art Culture through various projects regarding visual/performance arts and written works. Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may be to our community. If there are any questions, comments, or concerns please contact our former Editor in Chief through email ([email protected],) a direct message on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. We are also available for more informal inquiries on Snapchat. As always, we highly value and truly appreciate your support.

Best wishes,

Black Art; Real Stories

I had a flood of stuff come to me this morning writing wise. Definitely felt the wind of my ancestors help influence this.

In my further reflection of Lent, and what it means to me, I think about how our depiction of spirituality is off and diluted.

I look at the picture of Jesus that hangs in so many churches. Aside from the obvious flaws in the illustration, I notice how clean he looks. How comfortable he looks. How, safe he looks.

This perplexes me, and I think, also feeds this Western Christian perspective of first world comfort, and 'struggle' made up on our own terms.

What I've learned from deconstructing Christianity, and reconstructing a belief that values spiritual growth, I've found Lent, to me, is not shying from walking through "the wilderness". This place where we are faced with ourselves. Our jealous selves. Our violent selves. Our destructive selves. Our egotistic selves. It's ugly, painful, and dirty. But out of such struggle and honesty, we grow more than we would by any man made doctrine, step by step religious process made.
