This Pride month, we’re remembering and honoring our most loved Uncle Kev, who passed away from HIV/AIDS in 2005. He was only 47 years old.
To remember him is to celebrate the evolution of our bond. He was a loving Uncle who loved his family something good. We became even better friends as we got older. He was the fun Uncle, sneaking us into clubs from Chicago to South Beach, clearing dance floors along the way!
He was so proud when we opened Just Pop In! In 2003. It’s wild to think that he would transition only two years after opening. He would sit on a bar stool by the front door, greeting guests into our space! We got a kick out of it. He was so very funny! A fond memory we have of him at the shop was when a homeless man walked in to buy popcorn. This man did not have money and although, we would have gifted him, Kevin gave him money to feel dignified with his purchase. This was a simple example of his kind and compassionate heart.
Uncle Kev managed high rises and other properties in Chicago. His last residence was Eleanor Roosevelt’s home. These photos are from our family participating in the AIDS Walk in Chicago in 2006. We continued to participate in the Chicago AIDS walk until we would later dedicate our love and resources to Indianapolis.
Pride month is deeply personal to us. Uncle Kev taught us about courage, compassion, and the importance of showing up for one another. Pride is a celebration of love and progress, but it’s also a time to remember those we have lost. There are generations who have fought for acceptance and dignity and we’ll continue. Uncle Kev's memory continues to inspire us. We walk everyday in honor of him and so many others whose lives were impacted by HIV/AIDS.
Celebrating love always and will continue the work of building a more compassionate world! We love you, Uncle Kev!❤️🏳️🌈
