If you start studying for your now, you can take one a month and be done by the end of 2026. The are here to help. It’s literally their origin story: after I got licensed I realized my working study sketches that broke the exam content into bite-size visuals would be helpful to more than just me. Three study guides and over 1,000 sketches later, they have helped hundreds of young professionals on their path to licensure. You can do it, too! First up: understanding context. It’s important to your site and your project. What is the community makeup? What do the nearby buildings look like? What climate zone are you in?

As an architect, I was gutted to see the images coming out over the weekend of the demolition of a portion of the White House. I don’t even specialize in historic preservation and rehabilitation, and yet my heart sank to see unnecessary removal of historically protected public property.

I’m re-sharing these drawings from the so that we do better in the future, starting now. As citizens, call your representatives and hold them accountable. They could have stopped this. Call the White House and hold them accountable for lying about the extent of the project and damaging public land and structures. As architects or industry professionals, work with your professional organizations like to advocate for transparency and professional effort and accountability. As practitioners, make sure you understand these concepts so that you don’t desecrate respected historic spaces. Understand the values with which you practice your work so that you can stand up to selfish and harmful requests by your client.

I don’t have a good way to sum this up because I’m still heartbroken at this outcome. But I know we can do better together. And step one is understanding how. I hope these images help us do so.

Hard to believe it’s been 5 years since the launch of this little book. The was created from a desire to get kiddos interested in the world of architecture and design, and over the years it has filled my heart with so much joy when reader parents have reached out and shared pics and stories of their kids engaging with the book or their neighborhood because of something the book taught them. Can’t wait to see how it continues to grow - and yes, I’m still working on the next one!

If you are ever struggling to get a project done that you bought the material for - say - nine years ago, let me introduce you to a concept that will help you finally cross that project off the list: Having A Baby™.

Honestly, this little side project hasn’t been a priority (obviously). But with the impending little one, it was time to make sure we could get our bedroom fully dark when needed. Here’s to hoping for as much sleep as we can possibly manage in the coming months as we become a family of three.
