After nearly nine years of professional wine buying and selling, and decades of wine enthusiasm, I arrived at another level of Rosé selection and appreciation this Summer. It really has been a summer for drinking pink around The Valkyrie with my favorite very local Willamette Valley classics ( Illahe Vineyards Van Duzer Vineyards Stomp by Croft Vineyards) only drinking better and better every vintage, side by side with some remarkably good Rose’s from Hungary, Turkey, France, Portugal, and Mexico, and here we are finishing with more finesse than I thought possible with this vivacious Italian blend from Pasqua. Corvina, Trebbiano, Syrah and Carmenére make for a shockingly vibrant palate. So much pink grapefruit I briefly wondered if it was actually an ingredient- smooth sailing into nectarine/mango kept dignified by the anchoring minerality, refreshing by youthful acidity, and alluring with glances of florals. Only 11 minutes on the skins, and it outshines everything! If you ask me “White or red?” tonight, I’m answering “Pink”, without hesitation.

Can I get an Amen? If you ever wanted to try wine made by Benedictine monks that have been making wine for a millennium out of an Archabbey fortress in a remote hillside of Hungary, today is your day!
Spoiler alert- it’s also pink, as in Rosé! And it’s taking no prisoners. Turns out while the rest of the world was busy writing press releases about whatever red booze juice they could figure out how to get into a bottle, and the modern new world wine industry with tragically few exceptions, was busy just generally disrespecting Rosé, these guys have been over in Hungary quietly SLAYING it for over a thousand years, while patiently not waiting for anyone else to notice I guess as an order of monks would.
Typically made from a mix of Merlot, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc, don’t bother thinking about this total stud’s parts, even though there is nothing not to love here. Just enjoy the dynamic and devoted balance of ripe strawberry, tart cherries, and orange blossom, and thank the sweet baby geezus your summer has been this blessed.

🍈 Make no mistake- Melon de Bourgogne deserves every inch of the Willamette Valley it has. This a beautiful varietal for our terrior
❕❕This is exactly why I cannot resist a Slovenian wine- small region slaying Sauvignon Blanc on its own terms
🌸 My local love, back in stock, and by popular demand, one of the true gems of the Valley, Illahe’s Rosé of Tempranillo
💐 Natural Sparkling Rosé Pet Nat from Portugal is full of well played surprises and solid methodology in this ancient and compelling format
‼️ If you are curious about what an over ten year old Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is like, today is your day
📍 There needs to be more Pinot Meunier here, and in particular we all need more of this one from Scenic Valley
🚨 I can’t get enough Sicilian wines lately, and this Nerello Mascalese just made me double down on my infatuation

I always say if you must drink inexpensive wine, may it be Portuguese. The most bang for your buck of all the wine places, particularly old world, and they have been at it as long as anybody, despite forever and to this day being under appreciated by the wine over educated and minus valued by luxury junkies trading in their taste buds for the chemical and social endorphin cocktail of successfully seeking French approval, I guess. But why? Cuz nothing is cooler than punk rock and thats what I consider Portugal if I had to give them a genre to explain my perception of their approach, even though that is pointless because they could care less about anybody giving them anything; their game has always been too good to notice who’s on a podium when they only honor the echelon of individuality with no time or space for gates or their keeping. Portuguese reds are always epic mouthfulls of living on their own terms and if you are the type that craves a red that hits unapologetically and artistically enough too get away with it than this blend from Porrais is your guy. Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Sousa and Tinta Barroca get onstage and dirty it up like Tempranillo Who? while coming at you with some kind of baseline blend that has you leaving any affinity for upper middle class Bordeaux faster than the soft rock station on your radio dial cuz its too Douro mighty and primal to be ignored, but also soothes some kind thirst and angst inside you like a river nobody ever swims in or a dark bar on a sunny day, all animalistic and ancient and world class if you are exotic and humble enough to notice, with no ostentatious insults to your intelligence, just deep pulsing red wine being unequivocally itself.

Blind Tasting this evening 5-8pm! 3 Mystery Wines- can you guess what they are? Bring your own bandana is optional, as using all your senses to attempt to identify the wines is also encouraged, but bravo to this guy for going all in on the experience, with more impressive than usual results actually.
