James Wallace. May you rest in piece. Wally was my metal grandpa. He was the real deal. Founder of the Memphis Metal Museum. He taught my Mentor John Medwedeff, and many other smiths that became great mentors to many others. His far reaching weight in the field of blacksmithing is hard to comprehend. I don’t have the words or the stories to properly tell his tale. I had several times talking to him one on one and will treasure those moments. He loved to tell stories. Many more knew him on a greater level than I did. He showed up for his friends and he had a good time while he did it. I had the opportunity on two occasions to do so with him along with my mentor. Once for Charley and once for Wally himself at his shop raising party. When we were all helping Charley, Wally put his wet dog “Rain” that had just been sprayed by a skunk, in my bed when I didn’t want to wake up at 5:30am. That worked really good to get me moving! His impact on the metal world will be felt for decades to come. Photo barrowed from Jim Masterson.
