I was greeted by my regular, JD, as I opened the door at 2:00pm. It startled me, to be honest. I’m not proud to say a bad word may have left my mouth out of startle.

The game was already half over but JD took his game watching seat. As I walked by, he stops me with a childish excitement.

“Al, this is my mom. She is a beautiful woman!”

Well into his years, JD still spends time with his mom on Mother’s Day.

They say we are only here to be memories for our children.

To all you moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day. Enjoy all the moments that will be memories for your children.
Young and old, we will always celebrate you and carry you with us.

You’re doing great.

$20 used to take you far on a night out. Every night of the week had a different bar with the best special and the place would be packed. There were no cell phones to give you live updates. We’ll all meet at The Deuce and we’ll go from there. Those were the plans.

Somewhere along the way, it became more important to make a fancy drink than an affordable one. We are guilty of this as well.

When I set out to evolve the bar, I wanted to stay as true to the “old” Marquis as I could. In trying to navigate construction, global pandemics, and different customer trends, I forgot to stay true to what has always made us who we are. A place you can meet up with friends and have an affordable night out. $20 nights out should still exist.

We still make a great espresso martini and a killer Old Fashioned, but if you’re just looking to take a break from studying for finals or hang out with friends without breaking the bank, we got you. You can still have a good time for $20.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, life happens fast. Be young as long as you can and enjoy every minute. Every night out should start the same way, get to The Deuce.

We have a regular named JD. He’s probably in his 70’s and shuffles in from the bus stop for every Astros game. Think Carl Fredrickson from the movie Up. He orders iced tea and leaves $1 for each round even though we don’t charge him. You can find spilled sugar and peanut shells all around his special table. He longs for conversation and will stop us every time we walk by to talk Houston sports. He’s so excited to talk that his words run together which makes him difficult to understand. But there’s a smile with every sentence which lets me know how happy he is to have somebody on the other end of conversation.
“Goodbye, David” he says to me as he shuffles out the door.
As I make my way around the bar moments later I catch JD at the bus stop across the street. His short frame slouched on the bench in a sports coat 1 size too big. His jacket and fedora always his attire like a true gentleman used to dress when leaving the house. He’s staring at his feet which are barely able to touch the ground. I found myself overwhelmed with emotion knowing there would be no more conversation the rest of the day for JD. No more smile to share and no more words to fumble together with excitement. I wish I would have just sat with him and watched the game.
I read every month like the obituaries. “Another Houston institution suddenly shutters its doors...”
What our industry is currently going through is unprecedented. An entire generation doesn’t want to go out. How can I blame them. 6 years ago they were sent home from school and told not to go near people. They started college online. They started their first job remotely. During the years when we are supposed to figure out who we are, who we want to be, and learn from youthful mistakes, we sent them home. They say it only takes 3 months to form a new habit. We gave them years and now scratch our heads at the consequences.
I know the next generation will right the ship but I wonder how many more obituaries I will read and wonder if one day it will be mine.
I watch JD swing his feet on that bench and am reminded of one certainty. People need people.

04/10/2026

Welcome to the weekend, Marquis II family!

In honor of your big weekend party plans, I’m introducing a new segment called:

“Guys, guys. Let’s just go home.”

Let me know if you like these types of videos in the comments and I’m happy to do much more content like this with much better film quality 🤣.

That just means I have to get my 13yo kid to edit my videos. I can pay a content creator thousands or pay my son in chicken nuggets and baseball cards. I also accept gratuity in form of baseball cards and chicken nuggies.

Have a great weekend and remember that all legendary nights begin at The Deuce.
