Art of the Ash #57: Purge before the relight šŸ”„

If your cigar goes out, donā€™t immediately start puffing while you relight it.

First, gently blow out through the cigar while applying flame to the foot. This is called purging, and it helps clear out stale smoke and built-up combustion compounds that can make a relit cigar taste bitter or harsh.

This is especially helpful if your cigar has been sitting out for several minutes. The longer it has been extinguished, the more noticeable those stale, bitter flavors can be when you fire it back up.

Once the foot is evenly glowing again, give it a moment before taking your first draw.

A cigar going out doesnā€™t ruin the smoke. How you relight it can.

Before the official release, we had the chance to get an early look at the upcoming Small Batch Salomon from Cavalier GenĆØve. šŸ”¶

Wrapped in Habano JamastrƔn with a Habano Jalapa binder and a complex filler blend of Viso Estelƭ, Viso Paraguay, Viso Ometepe, and Seco Jalapa.

The Salomon vitola paired with a blend pulling to***co from four distinct regions makes this an especially interesting release from Cavalierā€”and one weā€™re looking forward to spending a little more time with.

This one isnā€™t in the humidor just yet, but Small Batch Salomon will be landing at Nice Ash soon. Weā€™ll keep everyone updated as soon as it arrives and share a full flavor breakdown closer to release.

Ever love a blend in a Robusto, then try the Toro or Lancero and wonder why it tastes different?

Youā€™re not imagining it.

Changing a cigarā€™s length and ring gauge changes the ratio of wrapper, binder, and filler to***co you experience with each draw. Since the wrapper can contribute significantly to a cigarā€™s flavor, a smaller ring gauge generally puts more emphasis on that wrapper relative to the filler.

A larger ring gauge gives the blender more room for filler to***cos and potentially a different balance of leaves within the same blend.

Thatā€™s why two vitolas carrying the same blend name arenā€™t necessarily identical smoking experiences.

Next time you find a cigar you love, donā€™t just buy another one.
