As my wife and I began our life together some time ago, she decided that she wanted to learn how to knit. That fateful decision led to knit nights, stashes, colorways, pooling, yarn barfing, frogging and numerous other terms that left me scratching my head. However, as beautiful socks, scarves and hats started to come my way, I quickly started to see the upside! And as I tagged along to sheep and
wool festivals and yarn stores, I started to get a glimpse into the passionate community that exists – farmers, processors, spinners, dyers – all working together to produce something amazing. This fascination led me to learn how to knit and while I am still working to improve my technique (“To Tight!” still rings out on occasion!), I wanted to learn more about the people behind all of the wonderful products that I have seen. The book itself will consist of pairings of wool and wine from around the world – generally from smaller individual, family run or regional producers – with a focus on the people behind the unique products that are featured. Complementing the yarn will be patterns and to go along with the wine, some carefully selected recipes. Why wine to go along with the yarn? They have a lot in common – an agricultural base, long history, real artistry at their core, passionate fans and small-scale operations producing the best products. Besides who doesn’t like a nice glass of wine while they are knitting! Throughout 2017, I will be working with collaborators to receive their wool and wine products, learn their stories and develop all of the elements (photos, layout, test knitting, receipts, etc.) This page will provide a glimpse behind the scenes as I document the writing process, share photos and provide updates. I hope that you will learn a bit about yarns and wines you are not yet familiar with and the people who create them. Welcome to the world of Wool and Wine!
