Cheers to Norm.
George Wendt, best known for playing Norm on the sitcom "Cheers," has died at the age of 76.
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the family said in a statement. “He will be missed forever.”
His family says Wendt died peacefully early Tuesday morning at home.
Born in Chicago in 1948, Wendt joined the improv troupe Second City in the 1970s.
In 1982, he landed the role of Norm Peterson on "Cheers" and appeared in all 275 episodes of the hit show. Wendt became a fan favorite and earned six Emmy nominations for his performance. He later reprised his role as Norm with appearances in the hit "Cheers" spinoff series "Frasier."
Throughout his career, he appeared in a variety of TV shows and movies, including 1985's "Fletch," 1992's "Forever Young," "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and "The Goldbergs."
Throughout his career, Wendt would also make regular appearances on "Saturday Night Live," becoming well known for watching “Da Bears” over sausage and beer in the recurring sketch, "Bill Swerski's Superfans."
In 2007, he made his way to Broadway as Edna Turnblad in "Hairspray." He also appeared in the Tony Award-winning play "Art" and was in the national tour of "12 Angry Men." He also played Santa Claus in the musical "Elf" on Broadway in 2017.
