Two Irish pubs have closed every week, on average, for the last 20 years.

A new report puts the total at 2,205 premises gone since 2005, roughly a quarter of every pub in the country.

The decline reached all 26 counties in the Republic. Limerick was hit hardest with 37 per cent of its pubs gone, followed by Offaly on 34 per cent and Cork on 33 per cent.

Dublin barely moved. It lost 1 per cent. Wicklow was next lowest at 9 per cent.

Last year brought 86 closures, up from 65 the year before, though still below the 117 recorded in 2023.

The report was commissioned by the drinks industry group, which is calling for a cut to alcohol excise in the upcoming budget. The economist behind it expects between 600 and 1,000 more pubs to go over the next decade if policy stays as it is.

Rural Ireland has taken the brunt of it. In a lot of villages, the pub was the last place left to meet anyone.
