Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001.
25 years have passed, but the weight of that day has not, and should not, fade with time.
We remember the innocent lives taken far too soon. We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel and other first responders, along with ordinary people, who ran toward danger when every instinct told others to run away.
We remember the men and women of our Armed Forces who answered the call in the years that followed. We remember the families who have carried the loss of that day every day since.
As a law enforcement officer, September 11 holds a deeply personal meaning for me. The courage and selflessness displayed that morning represent the very heart of what it means to serve: putting others before yourself, regardless of the cost.
As a business owner, I also think about what happened in the days that followed. Americans came together. We checked on our neighbors. We flew our flag proudly. We thanked our first responders. We supported one another. Our differences seemed smaller, and being there for each other mattered more.
25 years later, I hope we never lose that spirit.
Today, all of us at Higgins Family Brands pause to honor the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, the families who sacrificed, and everyone whose life was forever changed on September 11, 2001.
May we teach the generations who weren't yet alive what happened that day, not only the tragedy, but the courage, service, sacrifice and unity that followed.
