Magnolia Boulevard is a rock-n-soul powerhouse from Lexington, Kentucky, known for its vibrant blend of blues, soul, and Appalachian-influenced storytelling. Formed in 2017 by lead singer/guitarist Maggie Noelle and keyboardist Ryan Allen, the band grew from a shared vision for more intentional, fulfilling creative work. Joined by Roddy Puckett (bass), Austin Lewis (guitar), and Brandon Johnson (drums), the quintet has developed a signature sound often described as “Appalachian Soul,” marked by expressive songwriting, rich musicianship, and electrifying live performances that have earned them a reputation as a rising must see act.

Their self-titled debut full-length album, produced by acclaimed Kentucky producer Duane Lundy, showcases the band’s evolution and deep sense of purpose. Across eight tracks, Magnolia Boulevard weaves together blues, soul, rock, and reflective storytelling rooted in their Appalachian identity. As they expand to new stages and audiences along the East Coast, the band remains grounded in Kentucky’s collaborative music community, carrying forward a renewed commitment to authenticity, gratitude, and the transformative power of live music.

The City of Hickory's Sails Original Music Series, presented by Protection Products, Inc., will feature Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light this week. The performance starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at the Hickory Community Theatre in downtown Hickory.

Bookish bite. Sharp harmonies. Songs about saints, scientists, and stubborn women—this band delivers a sound that’s as fierce as it is thoughtful.

Fresh off their 2025 Telluride Bluegrass Band Contest win, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light are a Boston-based string band making music that blends folk tradition with feminist storytelling, poetic detail, and a little grit. At the center is Sumner’s songwriting—rooted in history, myth, and personal reckoning—carried by close harmonies, upright bass, acoustic guitar, and fiddle. The trio features Kat Wallace on fiddle and vocals and Mike Siegel on upright bass and vocals, whose playing brings both tension and tenderness to the sound.

Their sound is spare and intimate, sometimes eerie, sometimes sweet, always intentional. They call it Femericana—sharp-edged Americana with a splash of feminine rage.

Sails Music Coordinator Bob Sinclair says to get ready for “a spellbinding trio that brings traditional music, crafty songwriting, and feisty feminist storylines to the stage.”
