Dear Friends and Supporters of Sunset & Vines,

It is now about 24 hours since we surrendered Sunset & Vines' keys to Pacific Capital, the landlord of the village and with that we put to rest this chapter of Sunset & Vines.

The outpouring of support, thoughts and comments at our closing has been more than I could have possibly expected, and for that, words cannot express the gratitude I and the family of Sunset & Vines employees feel.

I took the liberty, on our staff's and your behalf, to give the keys to the landlord's representative along with a few choice words about the harm they've intentionally inflicted on individuals and the community at large. The landlord, lacking the nerve to sign his name on our letter of default, or to personally show up to re-take possession of his building, sent a "messenger" (as she referred to herself) to do the final closing.

In my opinion, he, along with his "business associates", has carried out a concerted campaign, with willful, malicious intent to diminish the tenancy of the village. To what end?...who knows? They've created the "ghost town", the "graveyard", the "deserted village" I've had numerous discussions with people who happened to visit over the past several years.

Our ownership signed the lease for Sunset & Vines in good faith, accepting terms that, had we known what the landlord's future strategy was to be, we should have never accepted. In short order after we signed the lease in May, 2013 the casino closed. Not long after, started the pattern of losing tenants...Flights of Fancy, Silver Sassy, two coffee shops, Tesoro, Portofino, Turquoise Door, Mishegoss, Solo Mist, Bernard's Bistro, Xing Asian Bistro, our Before Sunset Cafe...and I've probably missed a few others on this list. The not unexpected effect of this, reduced foot traffic, which became reduced revenues, which became our un-survivable lease with its built in scheduled rent increases each year, the most recent a 17% increase that took effect July 1st. And along with that, are 20 good people who've lost their jobs.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Sunset & Vines,

It is with sadness and no small amount of regret that I need to announce the closing of Sunset & Vines. The economics of trying to be a viable business in the Village at Lake Las Vegas has made it impossible for us to survive the heat of the summer months. Our ownership has been unable to reach any sort of lease compromise with our landlord, so this is the sad result of that inability to negotiate some sort of settlement.

We will cease our full operation at the end of business on Saturday the 17th. We will be holding a 50% off sale on a number of the fine wines left in our inventory beginning Sunday at 11 am, continuing through Tuesday at 5 pm (we are surrendering the keys on Wednesday morning).

All of us at Sunset & Vines feel privileged to have had the honor of your support over the past nearly 12 years. Although this particular chapter is coming to an end, I feel that this is not necessarily the final chapter. As many of you have heard me say from time to time: stylistically and conceptually, we've managed to put together a really good mousetrap at Lake Las Vegas, we've just needed more mice. I hope, and anticipate, that Sunset & Vines will once again come to be, perhaps under a different name, perhaps in a different location, but always consistent with the values and integrity we have striven to practice on a daily basis.

TO OUR FRIENDS....

I'm afraid I have bad news about Sunset & Vines. Our ownership has tried to renegotiate our lease terms to be survivable but our landlord has demanded an all or nothing resolution that has resulted in a 10-day notice to pay or surrender the premises.

Yesterday I've been informed that the consequence of the inability to negotiate some sort of settlement means Sunset & Vines will be closing its doors this coming weekend.

We need to make arrangements to get all wine out of the Cellar Rat lockers before Wednesday the 21st. If you are not in town, let me know and I'll see what I can do about moving your wines to a secure storage location.

Needless to say, I've canceled all the orders I had placed for the Cellar Rats September placement and no one has been billed.

For any of you who may wish to enhance your personal wine cellar, we will be having a 50% off sale on selected wines from our inventory beginning Sunday at noon.

On a personal note, I've gotten to know many of you as among the most loyal patrons any restaurant could hope to have. We; John, Stephanie, Edy, Dave, Kevin, Guy, Avery, Carlos, Jeremy and I are proud to be able to call you friends. Sunset & Vines has been more than just a job for each of us; it has been a place of great times and camaraderie, sharing wonderful wines and meals. And although this means the end of Sunset & Vines, there's no reason why this should not be looked at as an opportunity for a new beginning, albeit in a different location.

SPECIALS FOR WEEK OF 9/12 - 9/18

Monday...After a 1 week hiatus, our "Loco Lunes" is back! $3. gourmet tacos...a warm flour tortilla is complemented by your choice of several delicious fillings...Marinated Skirt Steak...Chopped Filet Mignon with Southwestern Spices...Sriracha Marinated Chicken Tender...Pollo Asado (marinated chicken thigh)...Togarashi Spiced Scottish Salmon...Bratwurst with Sauerkraut & Tomato...Adobo Seasoned Pork Flatiron Steak. Whichever you choose, it's impossible to make a bad choice! Served from 5 pm, we also offer our full dinner menu.

Tuesday...this week's $10. "Tuesday Tasting" will feature a potpourri of selections from our wine list...representing several regions from around the world...while mostly red, you can expect a white or 2 to make it onto the tasting table. Every wine presented will be available for purchase at specially reduced pricing for this day only. Note that some of wines may be on a special order basis with delivery by Friday. Also, if you purchase $10. or more, of anything, you will get a $10. tasting fee discount off your purchase, effectively making your tasting FREE!

Wednesday & Thursday...we'll be featuring a number of special "tapas" styled small plates beginning at 5 pm. We'll have Fried Soft Shell Crab with Lemon-Caper Sauce ($9.)...Filet Mignon Bolognese over Fettuccine ($9.)...Risotto Cake with Corn & White Truffle Oil ($5.)...Single Grilled Australian Lamb Chop with "Mojito" Vinaigrette ($7.)...Togarashi Spice Scottish Salmon "Toro" with Ponzu Sauce ($7.)...and maybe even a couple of other dishes as surprises!

Saturday...this week's "Carnivore Dinner" special will feature Moroccan Spiced Australian Lamb Chops for $27. Served as double cut chops the lamb is rubbed with a spice mixture of sea salt, paprika, cayenne, cumin, coriander & pepper and grilled briefly. Afterwards, slathered with Dijon mustard and an herb paste with cilantro, parsley, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil...DELISH! Sunday...ALL DAY BURGER SPECIAL!...it's our 8 oz. Australian Wagyu Beef Burger...normally priced at $16.95, today only $12.95! Your burger comes grilled to order, topped with melted Gorgonzola cheese crumbles, applewood smoked bacon, sliced tomato & organic baby greens, served on a sesame seed bun spread with Gorgonzola creme...AND a generous pile of crisp French fries. This is a great burger for a great price! It may not be a bad idea to call ahead and reserve yours...we sold out last Sunday...

Tuesday...this is my birthday week "Tuesday Tasting" and the theme this week is "It's my party and I'll pour what I want to!" Without listing the specifics here, suffice it to say that every wine presented can be considered to be at least a little bit "special"...and that they are ALL RED! This is a rare, once per year, opportunity (I only get one birthday a year) to taste the kind of "stuff" I personally enjoy on a regular basis. Every wine tasted will be available for purchase at specially reduced pricing for this day only. Note that some of these wines may be on a special order basis with delivery by Friday.
