If the name sounds familiar, it should: The Prime springs from one of the most storied restaurants in Manhattan — The Primeburger. Beloved for its vintage box seats with swiveling tray-tables, The Primeburger delighted patrons from around the globe for five decades. The classic coffee shop, on 51st Street across from St. Patrick’s Cathedral, began as part of a little chain called Hamburg Heaven. The chain debuted on Madison Avenue in 1938. The Washington Post called it “probably the most de luxe chopped steak stand in town.”

In 1965, Mal and Abe Marcus bought the chain’s 51st Street store and gave it its celebrated space-age look and its new name. Eleven years later they sold it to Tony DiMiceli, who passed it along to his sons Michael and John. The DiMiceli's had the wisdom to preserve both the look and the name. The DiMiceli's are back — just a little north and closer to home - complete with their 1965 burger-making machine. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a new taste of old New York. Follow us on Twitter
