MEMBER SPOTLIGHT | Maria José Ayasham
Today we’re celebrating the incredible work of Maria José Ayasham, one half of the artist duo Ayasham, known for creating powerful ceramic works inspired by ancestry, culture, and Indigenous traditions.
Over the past eight weeks, Maria José challenged herself in a new way through our Figurative Sculpture Workshop, stepping into the world of large-scale figurative sculpture and bringing this beautiful standing figure to life.
The piece depicts an Indigenous woman holding a ceremonial vessel, a form rich with symbolism and deeply connected to themes of heritage, identity, and memory. While many know Maria José through the work she creates alongside her twin sister as Ayasham, this sculpture offered an opportunity to explore a personal artistic journey and push her skills in a new direction.
What makes this accomplishment even more inspiring is the determination behind it. With a very tight deadline before her travels, Maria José remained committed to her vision, showing up week after week with focus, patience, and perseverance. Despite the challenges, she completed this remarkable sculpture and brought her vision to life.
As instructors, one of the greatest privileges is witnessing artists challenge themselves and grow. Maria José embraced the process wholeheartedly, and her beautiful spirit shines through every detail of this work.
Congratulations, Maria José. Thank you for sharing your creativity, dedication, and talent with our studio community. We are so proud of what you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what comes next—both in your personal practice and through the beautiful work you continue to create with Ayasham.
