Please get the word out that the convention housing cut off is June 16, 2026. The State House Hotel has only received 15 reservations so far out of the 1st and 4th Divisions. Unfortunately, not everyone can stay at the President Abraham Lincoln, thereโ€™s just not enough rooms!

PLEASE encourage your officers and members to book their room for convention asap, otherwise the Department will incur additional expenses.

With sadness and admiration, the American Legion reports the passing of Medal of Honor Recipient Colonel Bruce P. Crandall, U.S. Army (Ret.), and fellow Legionnaire.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Ia Drang in Vietnam. He passed away peacefully at his home on May 31, 2026, at the age of 93.

A legendary Army aviator, Colonel Crandall was awarded the Medal of Honor for repeatedly flying his UH-1 Huey helicopter into intense enemy fire on November 14, 1965, to deliver critical ammunition and evacuate wounded Soldiers. Completing 22 flights through relentless enemy fire, his actions saved countless lives and became one of the most celebrated acts of courage in Army aviation history.

With Colonel Crandall's passing, there are now 63 living Medal of Honor Recipients.

Please join us in extending our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the Crandall family.

The The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs offers Public Service Announcements for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Month

Springfield, IL โ€“ June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month, when we raise awareness, provide resources, and offer support to those challenged with the symptoms of PTSD. Currently, 12 million people in the United States are diagnosed with PTSD. Veterans are more likely to experience PTSD, particularly those who have been deployed to a war zone or are struggling with their transition to civilian life. To protect our veterans, we must raise awareness and engagement in recovery.

Everyone with PTSDโ€”whether they are veterans or civilian survivors of sexual assault, serious accidents, natural disasters, or other traumatic eventsโ€”needs to know that effective treatments can reduce symptoms and lead to a better quality of life.

In these Public Service Announcements, IDVA Director Terry Prince encourages those who are suffering to seek help and offers hope for a better future.

On this most sacred of days, our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and Gold Star Familes of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Stretching back to the birth of our nation in colonial times 250 years ago, the grief felt by the loved ones of patriots has been immeasurable. The price paid is one we can never repay.

While we enjoy the fruits of freedom today, hold them in your thoughts and prayers, and remember the fallen this Grateful Memorial Day.
