Hello to everyone still following The Tiki!
A year ago today, after a very restless night, we walked down a flooded Beach Blvd. with absolute dread in our hearts. The closer we got to Shore Blvd., the worse things looked. I fought the feeling of wanting but not wanting to make eye contact with anyone. What we found when we arrived at The Tiki was beyond our worst imaginings. Yes we expected flooding, but this was so much worse. The rounded front of the building had collapsed and allowed even more flood water in to churn and agitate, destroying most everything inside. Outside, looked like a bomb had gone off and we were spread out for blocks. Every piece we could find, I wanted to bring back, whether it was damaged or had just floated away. The decisions, cleaning and storage of it all was so overwhelming. We walked around crying and speechless, trying to process what we were seeing.
We had so much help for the next month cleaning up the property from our employees that showed up everyday and those that helped when they could and how they could, dear friends we met at The Tiki, groups of people we didn’t even know, the community, so many people helping. It wasn’t easy work, but was incredibly hot, wet, smelly, physically and mentally hard work. The giving of your time, concern, vehicles, tools and donations are immeasurable.
Some people still ask about rebuilding and aren’t aware that we did not own the property and we were unable to secure a new lease for the whole or partial property.
The shock and readjustment to this loss has been difficult. We had plans in the works for menu changes, rebranding and merch, and more.
Our piece of the puzzle and magic of Gulfport is gone, but seeing the Open Mic continue with Eddie and all the regulars is so good to see and hear. That core group has been playing together on Wednesday nights for many years. Roxanne and the Tuesday Tribe is going strong too. These two groups are truly special to us and to each other. Please check them out and support them when you can. So much talent in this town!
Thank you all so very much for being a part of the Tiki memories, for the awesome MUSIC, for entrusting us with your important events and celebrations, for loving Tacos and Tommies Sauce and Key Lime Pie, Landshark, Sangria and Smoked Salmon!
Check in for Key Lime Pie updates and new pictures from time to time. Wishing you all all the best❤️
