Chicken Fried Steak

Now it’s time for something we don’t cook often at home; but love to eat when we go out - chicken fried steak. Now for the educational portion of the update: we have done this special once or twice and called it Country Fried Steak. One of our customers was kind enough to tell us that with the white gravy, it is actually “chicken fried” instead of “country fried”. Turns out, Google agrees; there are some breading and cooking variations between Chicken Fried Steak and Country Fried Steak; but the biggest visual difference is white gravy (on chicken fried steak) and brown gravy (on country fried steak). I like nearly all gravy, but our dish at 5B’s has the thicker breading and the white gravy of chicken fried. How about that for a little extra credit for our weekly post?

As a restaurant that serves barbeque, we should also spend a little time and effort on good southern cooking from time to time. This special is just that; a half pound portion of chicken fried steak, and it will be served with our mashed potatoes, green beans, and white gravy. To really make it a bonafide Southern special, we will also be serving this one with a biscuit. Yep - my mouth is watering just writing about it.

We will be serving this special as a gorgeous plate for a price of $18. We hope to see you on Monday, September 7, for our Monday special or one of our other barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. (But the special won’t be available until 5pm.)

5B Cheesesteak (Philly Style)

The dog days of summer continue with us for a while yet. As much as I like comfort food, this weather is just calling out for a sandwich. Not to worry - I think a Cheesesteak sandwich is pretty comforting, too. Join us tomorrow for the 5B Cheesesteak (Philly style).

What do we think makes this sandwich one of the best around? - Simple delicious ingredients. We use an authentic hoagie roll from Amorosa’s bakery, a true local Philly special delivered straight to our door Monday morning.. The steak is a New York strip loin that we are slicing in-house so it cooks quickly, stays juicy and tender, and is as fresh as can be. The pièce de résistance is our homemade cheese sauce. While we love it on the mac and cheese and nachos; it really brings some depth of flavor to this cheesesteak sandwich. The sandwich is served with one of our delicious sides of your choice. We will offer the special as a dinner plate for $17. We hope to see you on Monday, August 31, for our Monday special or one of our barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. (But the special won’t be available until 5pm.)

It's the last Friday of the month - It's Tim Night!!! That's right, Tim Cadiere and the Tailgate will be performing live this evening. We are keeping a close eye on the weather and will make a decision closer to time on whether they play inside or outside on the patio. Music usually starts around 6:30.

Baby Back Ribs - Weekend Cookout Favorites

It’s been a couple of months, and this is prime time barbeque weather. It’s just too hot to stand over a hot grill or smoker and prepare it. Let us do that for you tomorrow, we will be making that Lake Area barbeque favorite: baby back pork ribs. Join us tomorrow evening for the Monday special - baby back pork ribs.

We tried searching for those “cute little” baby back ribs that you can eat a whole rack without much effort; but we decided that really isn’t how we do things at 5Bs. Instead, we sourced some excellent quality, healthy sized ribs that will fill you up and never let you down. To keep them a little different and special, we are smoking these and basting them with a sweet sauce that will make the ribs sticky, moist, juicy and flavorful. Because this special is clearly BBQ, we will serve it the same way we serve our other barbeque - as a plate (with a half-rack of ribs and 2 sides) for $20, or as a platter (with a full rack of ribs and 2 sides) for $30. We will not be offering just ribs - too complicated to program into our purchasing system. We hope to see you on Monday, August 24, for our Monday special or one of our other barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. (But the special won’t be available until 5pm.)

Meatloaf - It’s a Classic

Join us tomorrow for meatloaf. It is often requested, and now is the time to serve it again. (We love it, and we hope you do, too.)

Our meatloaf is like everything at 5Bs - simple and delicious. We start with quality beef, and we then add some special ingredients; breadcrumbs, a little seasoning, and a bunch of love. Then, we bake it to moist delicious perfection. Our meatloaf is served with mashed potatoes and LeSueur baby peas - because that is how we do it at home. I must say (because it seems to be a point of contention) our meatloaf does not have a ketchup glaze on the top… it just isn’t our thing; but you can certainly add ketchup, barbeque sauce, or the ever-popular pepper sauce to your serving if you desire. As a side-note: we will be adding a little side dish of brown gravy because everything is better with gravy.

We will serve the special as a generous portion of meatloaf with mashed potatoes, peas, and our signature Hawaiian rolls as a meal for $17. Like most specials, we will target having it prepared and ready to serve starting at 5pm. We hope each of you will come and see us and enjoy our special or stick with one of our traditional barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual.

The Always Popular: Butter Chicken

Tomorrow’s special will be butter chicken. This is a favorite of several of our staff and a frequently requested special. I like butter chicken as a savory alternative to traditional stews and soups. It has all the qualities a comfort food should have; and it is also a flavor change to the palette that really hits the spot. For those of you that have tried traditional curries in the past and have come away with toasted taste buds and a healthy fear - this dish is for you. It has the spice elements that attracted me to Indian food without the peppery heat that scares people away. It is simply delicious. (Note to our friends with robust taste-buds that like the heat - we always have Trinidadian pepper sauce on hand that will add a flavorful heat to darn near anything and compliment a curry perfectly.)

Our butter chicken recipe was adapted from an online recipe from Coles supermarket in Australia. We found it to be the best mixture for our palettes and the ingredients that we could find locally. It will be made in-house on Monday and served with rice, homemade Palak Paneer (spinach with paneer cheese), and a flat of naan bread. Starting at 5pm in the evening for dinner, we will offer a butter chicken dinner plate for $16. It will be a generous serving of butter chicken, garnished with some fresh cilantro, and accompanied by the rice, Palak Paneer, and naan. Come on down to 5Bs for our Monday special or one of our barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. (But the special won’t be available until 5pm.)

West Indies Islands - The Taste of Summer

School starts this week; but it seems like summer to me. This weather reminds me of living in the islands; to honor that, we are cooking food from the West Indies for our special tomorrow, August 3. Many of you haven’t had this before; but we have found that it is a favorite special for many folks that have had it….including most of our staff. Let me give you a little rundown: the food we are cooking is influenced by the 2 largest heritage groups in Trinidad and Tobago: the African heritage inspires slow-cooked rich stewed items that we collaborate with the vibrant flavors brought over by the immigrants from India. Bring them together and, BOOM, you have a meal that is rich, vibrant in flavor, and satisfying to eat and enjoy.

For only $16, we will serve a plate with curried chicken, geera pork, dhal, and rice. Assuming everyone is familiar with rice, here is a quick summary of the other menu items:
Curried chicken - a simple yellow curry with chicken, onions, geera, and cilantro. Trinidadian curry is generally thinner than an East Indian Curry, and we don’t add any heat during cooking - that comes from the pepper sauce that you add at the table.
Geera pork - pork Boston Butt slow stewed with roasted cumin (geera), onions, garlic, and a whole host of flavorful spices that is tender, rich, and delicious. This is always a favorite of any friends invited to dinner at Kent and Jenny’s house
Dhal - yellow split-peas that have been cooked with turmeric, cumin, and a bit of garlic to give a healthy side dish that is flavorful and warm.

As mentioned above, we will serve the special as a meal for $16. Like most specials, we start cooking early for those slow simmered items with the goal of having it ready to serve starting at 5pm. We hope each of you will come and see us and enjoy our special or stick with one of our traditional barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual.

Friends: It is the last Friday of July...what does that mean:

Tim Cadiere and the Tailgate will be playing live. (Inside because of the temperature) Show starts around 6:30. Come early and get a table, have a great drink and some delicious food.

Speaking of food: tonight will be our last Friday Night Beef Rib for the summer season. It has been fun and delicious; but we will be taking a break for the fall season until we find another good Friday night option. Call during business hours to reserve yours; or come on in starting at 5pm and order while they last.

The Special that Made it “A Thing”: Lasagna

5B’s opened in January of 2022. In October of that year, we started doing a weekly special on Mondays. The plan was to do something not on the regular menu and make it a delicious experience at a lovely price while making food that Kent and Jenny really enjoy. We started off slow - just a few specials sold each week; but feedback was generally good. In late November, Jenny made her lasagna as a special for the first time. Again, modest sales; BUT, someone did a review on social media about how much they liked it. After that, we began getting lots of calls about Monday specials and the lasagna in particular. Since then, our wonderful guests have been patronizing us regularly on Monday evenings and our staff eagerly awaits the announcement of what the special will be and seeing everyone that comes to enjoy it. In honor of that; tomorrow, July 27, Jenny will be making her homemade lasagna to share with you as well as enjoy for ourselves!!!

Who doesn’t like lasagna? Well, I am sure there are some; but most people I have met enjoy a good homemade lasagna. Tomorrow at 5B’s, you will have a chance to try out what I have been enjoying for years at home - a simple, traditional lasagna cooked with good ingredients and made with love.

Our lasagna, like everything we make, is simple and delicious. We use a mix of ground beef and mild Italian sausage; layered with sauce, ricotta cheese, lasagna noodles, and some mozzarella cheese to make it ooooey gooey. Starting at 5pm in the evening for dinner, we will offer a lasagna dinner plate for $18. It will be a generous serving of lasagna, topped with sauce, and accompanied by a side caesar salad and a garlic knot roll. So, talk to your friends that have tried it previously and come to 5Bs for our Monday special or one of our barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. (But the special won’t be available until 5pm.)
