The B.O.B. is a big building with a lot going on inside it, and the most common thing that happens to a first-timer is walking through the door with no idea which room is ours. 🕺

Main floor, Home Bar. Come in at 20 Monroe Center and it is right there in front of you. If you have found a staircase, you have gone too far.

The third floor is Ashton, which is also us, but a different night with a different crowd and a 6 PM lesson instead of 8. Worth knowing so nobody turns up on a Thursday expecting cocktails and a dress code.

Downtown, 21 and over, and free. Come on your own if that is what it takes.

Main floor, Home Bar, and the lesson is free.

Last one of the summer. Today, Sunday August 30, Bostwick Lake Inn, 4 PM until 9.

This is the only outdoor night we run and it does not come back until next year. Lakeside, all ages, free beginner lesson at 4, and then the floor stays open into the evening while the light goes gold over the water.

Bring a chair, bring your parents, bring the friend who says they only dance at weddings. Kids end up learning the basic step at the edge of the deck every single time.

Before the lake season closes out, the Bostwick appreciation post.

Four in the afternoon, outdoors, all ages, and by some distance the strangest and best room we use, mostly because it is not a room. People bring their parents. Somebody's kid learns the basic step off to the side and is better at it than the adults by six o'clock. The light at seven does something to the water that makes even the phone photos look deliberate.

It is the one place where the age range stops being a thing anybody mentions and just becomes what the afternoon looks like.

The part that never photographs well is how much of this runs on people quietly turning up. Instructors driving out of town on a Sunday. Whoever gets there early to sort the speakers. The regulars who worked out on their own that their actual job is to spot whoever is standing at the edge and go ask them.

Nobody assigns that last one. It happens every time anyway, and it is most of the reason a first-timer comes back.

Tonight, Thursday August 27, kizomba at The B.O.B. with Junior Mathieu.

This is the one people come to out of curiosity and then keep coming back for. It is slow and it is walked, so there is no count to fall behind on. If you have tried a lesson before and spent the whole hour doing arithmetic in your head, this is the one that fixes that.

Free lesson at 8, floor open till 1. No partner. Nobody is watching you, they are all busy with their own feet.

Kizomba is the one on our rotation that people have usually never heard of, and it is worth knowing what you are walking into.

It came out of Angola. It is slow, it is walked rather than stepped, and there are no turns and no patterns to memorise for the first long while. If salsa is a conversation at speed, kizomba is the same conversation sitting down.

The reason we teach it to beginners is that it strips out the thing most people find hardest. There is no count to lose. You walk on the beat, your partner walks with you, and the whole skill is in noticing what the other person is about to do.

It is also the closest connection of anything we teach, which puts some people off and is the exact reason others keep coming back for it. Worth knowing before you turn up.

No partner needed for this one either.
