The mountains change, but the climb remains the same.
A younger version of me thought courage looked like standing on top of a grain bin without a harness.
And maybe it did.
But these days I see it a little differently.
Courage is still climbing.
It is just that the mountains change.
Sometimes it is betting on yourself when everyone says not to.
Sometimes it is raising a family.
Sometimes it is teaching a young man how to stay professional when someone else is being much less than that.
Sometimes it is slowing down long enough to pray with a stranger who unexpectedly crossed your path.
For a long time I thought all these parts of my life were separate.
Business owner.
Husband.
Father.
Mentor.
Friend.
Man of faith.
But it turns out they are not.
The thread running through all of them is the same one that has always been there.
Push yourself.
Test your limits.
Learn something.
Pass it on.
My thoughts to share today:
The goal is not to become fearless.
The goal is to become the kind of person who moves forward anyway.
Be thankful for challenges.
A life without challenges might sound appealing, but it is usually a sign that you have stopped growing.
Face those challenges in a way that reflects your values.
Be consistent in your morals.
Be consistent in your faith.
Be consistent in your character.
People are always watching, especially when things get hard.
God willing, they will see what it means to face adversity with strength, navigate it with integrity, and emerge from it a little wiser than before, learning from your example instead of having to learn every lesson the hard way.
And THAT.
That right there.
That is the whole point.
Because one day the awards collect dust. The money gets spent. The accomplishments become stories. What remains are the people whose lives were made a little better because you showed them what courage, faith, perseverance, and character look like when life gets hard.
That is how you teach others to climb mountains of their own.
