Monster on Deck - PROLOGUE
We tried to move on. We really did.
Why revisit something like this? Why challenge the narrative of what has been told and what people believed? Why tempt the fates and draw the ire of such hateful, human beings? It’s very simple really. If we could stop someone from making the same mistakes we did, trusting the wrong people, red flags, bad decisions, then maybe it was worth it.
This book is the story of the Blackfish, an amazing concept with even more astounding food. People loved it, we were making money, and then it was ruined by greedy people. Art was used that was never compensated for, menu items stolen, employees never paid and deals betrayed.
Sure, we were pi**ed. We took them to court and they closed their doors, so we said forget it - move on - not worth it. We didn’t even ask for a portion of the company at that point, just money owed for the months of labor. It wasn’t even worth it when they had me falsely charged for theft, but that’s for later. The point was to move on. So we did, moving to the west coast was one of the best decisions we have ever made as a family and we don’t think twice about those not worth remembering.
However, we do remember the friends we recruited for the restaurant, and the new family we built - spending months of shifts together, open to close, while the ”others” drank up the profits. We also remember the calls after we left of pay not being addressed, some of those people are in this book and if any money can be made from its sale, the funds go to them.
Either way, I felt it was a story needing to be told, hoping someone might save themselves the pain of partnering with psychopaths. Maybe even inspire someone to tell their story.
If not, you will at least appreciate the menu and recipes being included, that s**t was good.
