On this opening day of the World Cup, Virginia has a strong presence in the World Cup. Two former UVA men’s soccer players are playing – Derrick Etienne for Haiti and Joe Bell for New Zealand. Four players on the US team have Virginia connections: Christian Pulisic is the son of a George Mason University player; Matt Turner played for the Richmond Kickers; Giovanni Reyna is the son of former UVA player Claudio Reyna; and Alex Freeman is the son of a VA Tech football player.
